Chapter 8 - The Price of Peace

The summer heat began to settle over Philadelphia, but within the walls of the Messina estate, the cold walls of my prison had completely melted away.
I no longer slept in the East Wing. My belongings had been moved into the master suite, our rooms connected by a door that was now permanently left open.
Every morning, I woke to the scent of fresh coffee and the warm, solid weight of Luciano’s arm wrapped around my waist, holding me close as if he were afraid I might vanish if he let go.
"You're thinking too loud, Valyria," he whispered one morning, his voice deep and raspy with sleep as he pulled me closer against his chest.
"I was just thinking about the first day I came here," I said, turning in his arms to look at him. "I was so terrified of you."
"And now?" he asked, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth.
"Now, I think you're just a big, soft wolf who likes to pretend he's a monster," I teased, reaching up to run my fingers through his dark hair.

Luciano let out a rich, low chuckle that vibrated through my chest. He leaned down and pressed a deep, lingering kiss against my lips—a kiss that carried the warmth of our shared survival and the absolute certainty of our future.
"Only for you, mia regina," he whispered against my skin. "Only for you."
