Chapter 9 - The Final Strike of the Fallen Capo

The peace, however, was not destined to remain undisturbed.

Enzo Varga, despite being stripped of his rank and exiled from the city, had not gone quietly. He had spent the last two months hiding in the rural hills of North Jersey, gathering a crew of desperate, bloodthirsty mercenaries who had been cast out of the rival families.

On a rainy Tuesday evening, while Luciano was away in New York dealing with a union dispute, Enzo launched his final, desperate strike.

I was sitting in the library, reading a book, when the sound of automatic gunfire erupted from the front gates.

"Mrs. Messina!" Bruno yelled, running into the room, his rifle drawn. "The perimeter has been breached! We have multiple shooters on the lawn! We need to get you to the panic room!"

"Sienna?" I asked, panic seizing my throat. "She was staying in the guest cottage!"

"We'll find her, ma'am! But you have to move now!"

Before we could reach the hallway, the large glass windows of the library shattered in a spectacular explosion of glass. Three armed men in tactical gear stormed the room, their weapons firing blindly.

Bruno returned fire, dropping the first shooter, but he was struck in the shoulder by a stray bullet, collapsing to the floor with a groan.

I scrambled backward, my eyes searching for a weapon. I grabbed a heavy brass candelabra from the mantle and ducked behind the large mahogany desk.

"Valyria!" a raspy, familiar voice yelled through the dust and smoke.

Enzo Varga walked through the shattered window, his right hand wrapped in a thick black leather brace where Luciano’s blade had pinned him to the table. His face was twisted in a manic, drug-fueled rage.

"You thought you could discard me like trash?!" Enzo shrieked, pointing his shotgun at the desk. "I built this empire with Luciano's father! And now, I'm going to take the only thing he values!"

"Leave her alone, Enzo!" Bruno gasped from the floor, trying to raise his pistol, but Enzo’s man kicked it away, pinning Bruno down.

Enzo walked slowly toward the desk, his boots crunching on the shattered glass. "Come out, Valyria! Let's see if your rich husband can save you when your pretty head is in pieces!"

I held my breath, my heart pounding so hard I was afraid he would hear it. I gripped the heavy brass candelabra, preparing to strike when he turned the corner.

"I suggest you put the gun down, Varga."

The voice didn't come from the library door. It came from the shattered window behind him—low, cold, and carrying the absolute authority of a man who had returned from the dead.

Enzo spun around, but he was too slow.

Luciano stood in the threshold, his coat wet from the rain, his gray eyes burning with a lethal, unbridled fury that made the room drop below freezing. He didn't have his pistol drawn; he held only his sleek silver stiletto blade.

"Luciano!" Enzo gasped, taking a step back. "How... how are you here?! My men were supposed to intercept you on the Jersey turnpike!"

"Your men are currently at the bottom of the Delaware River, Enzo," Luciano said, his voice flat, deadly. "And now, it is your turn."
