"Chloe," Nia whispered, her voice barely audible over the fading sirens. "She put this in my folder while I was waiting in the hallway corridor before the session started. She was standing right next to me in the crowd, and I didn't even notice."
"This is no longer a civil matter, and it's far beyond a standard fraud case," Judge Kalisto said, turning to the lead court officer. "Take Ms. Vance and her daughter to my private chambers immediately. Do not let anyone—and I mean anyone—near that room without my direct clearance."
Ten minutes later, Nia was sitting on a plush leather sofa inside the judge’s private, book-lined office. Maya, exhausted from the emotional rollercoaster and full from her lunch, had fallen asleep on the opposite end of the couch, her head resting on a soft pillow the judge’s secretary had provided.
The door clicked open, and Judge Kalisto walked in, removing his heavy black robe and draping it over a chair. Beneath it, he wore a sharp, tailored charcoal suit. He looked less like a rigid judicial figure now and more like a man carrying a heavy, secret burden.
"I owe you an explanation, Nia," he said, sitting at his desk and rubbing his temples.
"You know them," Nia said, the realization hitting her. "This isn't just another case on your docket. There's something you aren't telling me."
The judge sighed, a deeply human, weary sound. "Two years ago, before Marcus and Chloe targeted your bank accounts, they operated under different aliases in a neighboring state. They targeted high-net-worth individuals through fraudulent real estate syndicates. One of those individuals was an elderly man named Arthur Kalisto."
Nia gasped. "Your father?"
"My uncle," the judge corrected, his voice tight with suppressed anger. "They drained his life savings. Three million dollars. The stress caused him a stroke from which he never recovered. He passed away six months later. I swore an oath on his memory that I would find the people responsible. For two years, I have been working alongside federal investigators to track their financial movements."
He leaned forward, placing his hands flat on the desk. "Marcus and Chloe didn't just steal your money to live large, Nia. They used your Social Security number, your signature, and your bakery’s tax ID to establish a complex web of shell companies. To the federal government, on paper... you are the mastermind behind the entire multi-million dollar fraud operation."
Nia felt the room spin. "What? No... no! I'm a baker! I barely make rent!"
"I know that," Kalisto said softly. "The evidence your daughter accidentally revealed today—the fact that you were left broke, working two jobs, and completely unaware of their actions—proves your innocence. But Marcus and Chloe know the walls are closing in. They are trying to frame you as the fall guy so they can escape the country with the remaining funds. That note? It’s an attempt to scare you into fleeing, which would make you look guilty to the feds."
Suddenly, the phone on the judge’s desk rang sharply. He answered it, listening intently for three seconds before his face turned completely white.
"Where?" Kalisto demanded into the receiver. "When? Block the area now!"
He slammed the phone down and looked at Nia with absolute dread. "We have to go. Now."

"What happened?"
"Your bakery," the judge said, his voice trembling. "It’s on fire. And the police just found a body inside."
