Chapter 4 - The Frame-Up 💥

Headline: The Bakery In Flames! A Devastating Trap Designed To Silence The Innocent! The sky above Nia’s small, beloved bakery was choked with thick, oily black smoke by the time the police cruiser, escorted by Judge Kalisto’s private security detail, pulled up to the barricades. Fire engines threw flashing red and blue lights against the shattered glass of the storefront.
Nia lunged out of the car, but a police officer immediately caught her by the waist, holding her back. "Ma'am! You can't go over there! It's an active crime scene!"
"My shop! Everything I've built!" Nia screamed, watching her dreams turn to ash. That bakery was her lifeline, the only thing keeping her and Maya afloat.
Judge Kalisto stepped out of the vehicle, his presence immediately commanding the attention of the police captain on scene. "Captain Vance, what’s the status? What did you find inside?"
The captain walked over, his face grimed with soot. He looked at Nia with a cold, suspicious expression that sent a shiver down her spine. "The fire was intentionally set using commercial accelerants. It started in the back office. But that’s not the worst of it."
The captain pulled out a clear plastic evidence bag. Inside was a sleek, high-end encrypted laptop and three black duffel bags packed tightly with stacks of hundred-dollar bills.
"We found these in a hidden wall safe in the back office, Ms. Vance," the captain said coldly. "Along with a forged passport with your photo on it, issued under the name 'Chloe Sterling.' There’s roughly two million dollars in cash here."
"No!" Nia cried out, shaking her head violently. "That's not mine! I don't even have a wall safe! I've never seen that laptop in my life!"
"Save it for the detectives, ma'am," the captain said, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt. "An anonymous tip called this in ten minutes before the explosion, stating that the mastermind behind the multi-million dollar fraud ring was burning her own shop to destroy evidence and flee the country. Finding your fake passport and two million in cash makes a pretty ironclad case."
"Step back, Captain," Judge Kalisto intervened, his voice cutting through the noise of the fire engines like a blade. "I am the presiding judge over the related corporate fraud docket. This woman is a confirmed victim of identity theft. Her ex-husband and sister are actively framing her."
"With all due respect, Judge Kalisto," the captain replied, unyielding, "until a federal investigator clears her, the physical evidence is pointing directly at her. I have a warrant signed by a magistrate ten minutes ago based on the emergency tip and the discovered assets. I have to take her in."
"Mommy!" Maya wailed from inside the police cruiser, her little face pressed against the glass, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Nia looked from her crying daughter to the burning remnants of her life, then to the handcuffs in the captain's hand. The trap had been sprung perfectly. Marcus and Chloe hadn't just stolen her past; they were now systematically destroying her future, ensuring she would take the fall for their crimes while they vanished into the night.
"Wait," Judge Kalisto said, stepping closer to the evidence bag containing the laptop. He noticed a faint, blinking blue light on the side of the encrypted device. "Captain, that laptop is actively transmitting data. It wasn't left here to be destroyed. It was left here to broadcast a signal."
Suddenly, Nia’s personal cell phone buzzed in her pocket. It was an unknown number.

With the judge’s nod, she answered it on speakerphone. A voice she hadn't heard in two agonizing years filled the air—cold, mocking, and completely devoid of remorse.
"Hi, big sis," Chloe’s voice purred. "Do you like the fireworks? You should have taken the ticket and stayed quiet. Now, you have exactly thirty minutes to give us what we want, or you’ll never see your daughter again."
