Chapter 6 - The Bloodline's Retribution (The Final Chapter)

The Monday morning sun rose over the glass monolith of Cross Enterprises in downtown Seattle, casting long, sharp shadows across the penthouse boardroom.

Victoria Cross sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, surrounded by the twelve members of the board of directors. She wore an immaculate pearl necklace, her posture regal, her face an unreadable mask of triumph.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the board,” Victoria announced, her voice echoing with absolute authority. “As you have seen in the morning papers, my son, Nathaniel, has become embroiled in a disqualifying personal scandal. He has hidden an unstable ex-wife and three illegitimate children on a remote island, resulting in a violent altercation with security forces. He is mentally unfit to lead this company. I call for an immediate vote to strip him of his CEO title and return the chairmanship to me.”

“The vote will not be necessary, Mother.”

The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open.

Nathaniel Cross walked in. He looked immaculate, wearing a sharp charcoal suit, his gray-blue eyes flashing like lightning. But he wasn't alone.

Walking beside him, wearing a stunning, tailored cream suit, her hair styled perfectly, was Claire. And behind them, dressed in matching miniature suits and a beautiful velvet dress, were Owen, Caleb, and Lily.

The board members gasped, murmurs breaking out across the room.

Victoria’s face twisted in sudden, ugly rage. She slammed her cane against the floor. “Nathaniel! How dare you bring this white trash and her bastards into this boardroom! Security, remove them! Judge Vance has already signed the warrant for her arrest!”

“Judge Vance has been arrested by the FBI for federal corruption and bribery, Victoria,” Claire said, her voice ringing out with a terrifying, calm confidence that stunned the entire room. She walked right up to the table, tossing a thick legal dossier directly in front of Victoria. “And your warrant is completely worthless.”

“What is the meaning of this?!” Victoria screamed, looking around at the board members, who were suddenly refusing to meet her eye.

Nathaniel stepped up to the head of the table, placing his hands flat on the polished wood, leaning down until he was inches from his mother’s face.

“Thirty years ago, Mother, my father didn’t die of a heart attack,” Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that was picked up by the room’s microphones. “You poisoned him. You altered his medical records to hide the arsenic trace, all so you could take control of Cross Enterprises before he could divorce you.”

A collective gasp echoed through the room. Victoria’s face drained of all color, turning a sickly, ghostly gray. “That... that is an absurd, libelous lie!”

“Is it?” Claire asked, flashing a cold, brilliant smile. “When I was pregnant five years ago, I didn’t just run away, Victoria. I took something from your private safe at the estate. I took the original, unedited autopsy report of Arthur Cross. The one you paid five million dollars to suppress.”

Claire tapped a button on her tablet. Instantly, the massive digital screens in the boardroom flashed a scanned copy of the true medical document, clearly showing the lethal levels of arsenic found in Nathaniel’s father’s blood, signed by the coroner with a taped confession detailing Victoria's blackmail.

“You wanted me gone not because I was middle-class,” Claire whispered, her eyes burning with retribution. “But because you knew I had found the file. You used my pregnancy to terrorize me into silence.”

Victoria shook violently, her hands gripping her silver cane so tightly her knuckles cracked. “You... you have no legal standing here! You are nothing!”

“Actually, she is the majority shareholder,” Nathaniel said, his voice booming with absolute victory. “According to the Helios Trust bylaws created by my father before you murdered him, the moment our children turned five, fifty-one percent of all voting stock transferred directly to Claire and myself as joint trustees. As of five minutes ago, the board has verified the shares.”

Nathaniel turned to the board of directors. “All those in favor of permanently removing Victoria Cross from the board, freezing her assets, and handing her over to the federal authorities waiting downstairs?”

Every single board member raised their hand instantly.

Victoria stared at her son, then at Claire, and finally at the three children standing at the door. Owen looked directly at his grandmother, his little chin held high, possessing the exact same unyielding stare as his father.

Two FBI agents entered the boardroom, handcuffs gleaming in the bright fluorescent lights. Without a word, they gripped Victoria’s arms, stripping her of her cane, and led the once-mighty matriarch out of the building in absolute disgrace.

The room fell silent. The battle was over. The five-year nightmare was finally at an end.

Nathaniel turned to Claire. The hard, ruthless billionaire completely melted away, leaving only the man who had burned pancakes in their kitchen five years ago. He dropped to one knee, right there in front of the entire board of directors.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a simple, familiar ring—the same diamond band Claire had left on the dresser five years ago.

“Claire,” Nathaniel said, his voice thick with emotion, tears finally spilling from his gray-blue eyes. “I was blind to the world, but now I see perfectly. You are my home. You always have been. Will you marry me? Again? And let me be the father our children deserve?”

Claire looked down at him, her heart overflowing. The pain of the past five years vanished, replaced by the brilliant, unstoppable light of a new beginning.

She smiled, tears streaming down her face. “Yes, Nate. A thousand times, yes.”

Owen, Caleb, and Lily cheered, running forward and throwing their arms around their parents. Nathaniel scooped them all into a massive, tight embrace, holding his family close to his chest.

He looked at his wife, his three beautiful triplets, and for the first time in five years... Nathaniel Cross finally knew how to breathe.
