Chapter 3 - Shadows of the San Juan Estate

The helicopter touched down on the private helipad of the San Juan Island estate just as twilight bled into a dark, stormy night. The triplets had fallen asleep during the flight, exhausted by the sheer emotional chaos of the day.

Nathaniel gently carried Owen and Caleb in his arms, while Daniel Mercer carried a sleeping Lily. Claire walked closely beside them, her eyes darting nervously around the heavily fortified, ultra-modern fortress of glass and steel.

Once inside, the children were safely tucked into a massive, secure guest suite upstairs. Claire stood by the doorway, watching them sleep under the plush down comforters.

“They look so peaceful,” Nathaniel said softly, stepping up behind her. He smelled of rain and expensive sandalwood.

Claire stiffened, stepping away from his warmth. “Don’t, Nate. Just because I agreed to come here doesn’t mean everything is fixed. We are doing this to keep my children safe from your mother. That’s it.”

“Our children, Claire,” Nathaniel corrected gently, though the rejection stung. “And I know. I don't expect you to forgive me overnight for being blind to my mother's malice. But I swear to you, I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you.”

Suddenly, Daniel Mercer tapped on the doorframe, his expression grim. “Mr. Cross. A word in the study. It’s urgent.”

Nathaniel nodded and followed Daniel down the hall into the dimly lit study. Claire, driven by an anxious instinct, followed them silently, standing just outside the heavy oak doors.

“What is it, Daniel?” Nathaniel asked, pouring himself a scotch with a shaking hand.

“We ran a deep-dive sweep on the court docket your mother mentioned,” Daniel said, throwing a tablet onto the desk. “She wasn't lying. Judge Vance signed an emergency ex-parte order granting temporary custody to Victoria Cross, citing Claire Bennett’s 'unstable living conditions' and 'history of sudden flight.' They’ve flagged Claire as a parental kidnapping risk.”

Nathaniel slammed his glass onto the table. “She didn’t kidnap them! They are her children!”

“To the law, on paper, it looks bad, sir. Claire changed her social security number, used a fake alias for three years, and didn't list a father on the birth certificates. Victoria’s lawyers are painting her as a unhinged fugitive.” Daniel paused, his voice dropping. “But that’s not the worst part.”

“What could possibly be worse?”

“I pulled the dark-web traffic around Victoria’s personal shell companies over the last forty-eight hours. She didn’t just find Claire by accident today at the mall, Nathaniel. She’s been tracking Claire for three months. And she hired a private mercenary group—Blackwood Security—to intercept Claire today.”

Nathaniel froze. “If she already knew where Claire was, why wait until today? Why wait until I was there?”

From the doorway, Claire gasped, stepping into the room. Her face was deathly pale. “Because she wanted you to see us, Nate. It was a trap.”

Nathaniel looked at Claire, then back to Daniel. “A trap for what?”

Daniel looked down at the tablet, his face grim. “Sir... Victoria didn’t file for custody to raise those kids. The board of Cross Enterprises is holding a vote of no-confidence against you on Monday morning. If you are embroiled in a massive, ugly, scandalous custody battle involving hidden children and a fugitive ex-wife... the board will legally strip you of your CEO position and hand full voting control back to your mother.”

Nathaniel’s breath hitched. His mother didn’t want the children out of love. She was using his own flesh and blood as pawns to launch a corporate coup.

Before anyone could speak, the mansion’s alarm system began to wail—a piercing, red-lit shriek that shattered the silence of the island.

The security monitors on the wall flashed to life, showing three black SUVs crashing through the estate’s outer iron gates.
