Chapter 4 - The Breach

“Get to the kids!” Nathaniel roared, the billionaire corporate tycoon vanishing, replaced entirely by a desperate, territorial father.
Claire didn't need to be told twice. She sprinted down the hallway, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The red alarm lights flashed against the walls, painting the luxury estate in a bloody hue. She burst into the guest suite just as Owen, Caleb, and Lily were waking up, crying and terrified by the deafening siren.
“Mommy! What’s happening?!” Lily shrieked, covering her ears.
“It’s okay, sweetie! It’s just a game, a big game!” Claire lied through her teeth, her hands shaking as she pulled all three of them out of bed. “We have to go with Daddy, okay? We have to be very, very quiet.”
Nathaniel burst into the room, followed by Daniel Mercer. “The main stairs are compromised. They’ve breached the lower glass pavilion. We need to use the reinforced panic room in the basement.”
“Nate, they have guns!” Claire whispered in horror as the distinct sound of suppressed gunfire echoed from the floor below. Daniel’s security team was already engaging the intruders.
“They won't touch a hair on your heads,” Nathaniel said, his gray-blue eyes burning with an absolute, lethal focus. He scooped up Lily, while Claire grabbed Owen and Caleb’s hands.
They moved quickly down the back service stairwell, the cold concrete steps echoing with their frantic footsteps. Every shadow seemed to stretch and twist. Nathaniel’s heart pounded violently. He had spent five years chasing wealth, power, and prestige, but as he looked at the terrified woman beside him and the three precious lives they had created, he realized he would burn the entire world to ash just to keep them safe.
They reached the basement level. Daniel Mercer kept his weapon raised, checking the corners. “Clear. The panic room is just past the wine cellar.”
They ran down the corridor, but just as they reached the heavy, vault-like door of the panic room, a figure stepped out from the shadows of the wine cellar.
It wasn't a mercenary.
It was a young man, barely twenty-five, holding a silenced pistol. His hand was trembling violently, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and desperation.
“Stop right there,” the young man stammered, pointing the gun directly at Nathaniel.
Claire let out a stifled scream, pulling Owen and Caleb behind her.
Nathaniel stopped, his eyes narrowing as he recognized the boy’s features. “Julian? Julian Vance?”
The boy swallowed hard. “I’m sorry, Mr. Cross. I didn’t want to do this. But your mother... she has my father. Judge Vance. She has proof of his bribe leak. If I don’t deliver the kids to her tonight, she’ll ruin my family. She’ll put my dad away for life!”
“Julian, listen to me,” Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a calm, hypnotic, yet utterly commanding tone. He slowly stepped in front of Claire and the kids, completely shielding them. “You are pointing a gun at a man who can buy and sell your entire lineage before breakfast. If you pull that trigger, my security director will kill you before your shell hits the floor. But if you put that gun down... I will protect your father. I will wipe his slate clean.”
Julian’s eyes darted frantically between Nathaniel and Daniel’s raised weapon. “You’re lying! Victoria said you’re a monster! She said you don’t care about anyone but yourself!”
“Look at me, Julian!” Nathaniel commanded, his voice echoing in the concrete hall. “Look at my kids. I am a father. And I will do whatever it takes to protect my children. Don’t ruin your life for a woman who views you as disposable.”
Tears streamed down Julian’s face. His hand shook worse than before. For a second, it looked like he was going to lower the gun.
But then, a loud crash echoed from the stairs behind them. The mercenary backup had arrived. Panicking, Julian’s finger tightened on the trigger.
