Chapter 4 - THE NURSERY REUNITEDThe door creaked open. Grace was still standing by the laundry hamper, shielding little Lucy, who had fallen asleep from exhaustion against her mother's shoulder.

"It’s over," Adrian said softly, his harsh exterior melting the moment he stepped into the warm light of the yellow room.

Grace let out a long, ragged breath, sliding down the wall until she sat flat on the floor, tears finally streaming down her face. "Thank God... Oh, thank God."

Adrian walked past her and entered the nursery.

Baby Clara was awake again, chewing on the corner of a soft pink blanket, her big blue-gray eyes blinking curiously at the tall man standing over her crib.

Adrian reached down. This time, nothing stopped him.

He slid his large, calloused hands under the baby's arms and lifted her up. She weighed almost nothing, a fragile, beautiful anchor tying him back to a world he thought he had lost forever. When he pulled her against his chest, Clara let out a soft gurgle and grabbed hold of the collar of his black shirt, her tiny fist curling tightly around the fabric.

Adrian closed his eyes, burying his face in her soft, brown hair. A single tear—the first he had shed since the day of the fake funeral—escaped and tracked slowly down his scarred cheek.

"I’ve got you," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I’m never letting you go."

Grace stood up slowly, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. "What do we do now, Mr. Adrian? The house... the city... it won't be safe for long."

"We aren't staying in New York," Adrian said, turning around with Clara cradled securely in one arm. He looked at Grace with deep, unwavering gratitude. "You saved my daughter's life, Grace. You and Lucy risked everything to keep her safe when everyone else betrayed us."

"I promised Eleanor," Grace said simply. "On the night she knew the ambush was coming, she begged me to take the baby if anything happened to her. I couldn't break that promise."

"You won't have to hide anymore," Adrian promised. "From this moment on, you and Lucy are family. My house, my resources, my protection—they belong to you as much as they do to us."

Lucy stirred at the sound of voices, rubbing her sleepy eyes. "Is the bad man gone, Mr. Adrian?"

Adrian walked over and crouched down so he was at eye level with the little girl, holding Clara gently in his other arm.

"The bad man is gone, Lucy," Adrian said with a rare, gentle smile. "And because of you, Baby Clara gets to grow up."

Lucy beamed, wrapping her small arms around Adrian’s neck in a tight hug.

Ten minutes later, the small white house in Queens was empty.
