Chapter 1 - THE HOSPITAL CONFRONTATION

Hook: A furious bride-to-be, a cowardly ex-husband, and a secret that just exploded in a postpartum ward. Who will survive the fallout? The heavy wooden door of Room 412 didn't just open; it flew back against the wall with a deafening crash.

Sofía stood in the doorway. She was breathtakingly beautiful, but right now, she looked like a hurricane draped in designer clothes. Her eyes were bloodshot, her expensive makeup was smudged with tears, and her hands were clenched into tight fists. She was breathing heavily, her gaze darting around the room until it locked onto Mateo.

"You absolute piece of garbage," Sofía hissed, her voice vibrating with a terrifying mix of rage and heartbreak.

Mateo took a step back, his back pressing against the cold glass of the hospital window. "Sofía, please, let me explain! It’s not what it looks like!"

"Not what it looks like?!" Sofía screamed, completely ignoring the "Quiet Please" signs posted all over the hallway. She marched into the room, pointing a manicured finger at Ximena, who was clutching the hospital sheets to her chest, her C-section stitches throbbing with sharp, burning pain. "You told me she was your crazy ex-wife who refused to let you go! You told me she was obsessed with you! But someone just sent me a birth announcement from this hospital with your name listed as the father!"

Ximena felt a wave of icy calm wash over her anger. She looked at Mateo, whose face was completely drained of color. He looked like a cornered rat.

"Mateo," Ximena said, her voice dripping with pure disgust. "Tell her the truth. Tell her right now."

"Ximena, please, don't do this to me," Mateo whimpered, looking between the two women. He turned to Sofía, his voice cracking. "Sofía, listen to me. Yes, that's my son. But it was a mistake! Ximena trapped me! She got pregnant right before the divorce was finalized just so she could extort me for alimony! I didn't tell you because I didn't want to ruin our happiness! I was going to pay her off so she would disappear from our lives forever!"

"You did WHAT?!" Ximena roared. Forgetting the agony in her abdomen, she forced herself to sit upright. "You lying, pathetic coward! You knew about this pregnancy for eight months! You promised to support him, and then you completely vanished because you were too busy spending your new fiancée's family money!"

Sofía looked between them, her chest heaving. The realization that she had been lied to by the man she was supposed to marry in three days was crashing down on her. She walked slowly toward the clear acrylic bassinet where baby Leo was sleeping.

For a terrifying second, Ximena froze. "Don't you dare touch my son," she warned, her maternal instincts kicking in with ferocious intensity.

Sofía stopped. She looked down at the tiny, innocent baby boy. He had Mateo’s nose, but he had Ximena’s peaceful brow. The anger in Sofía’s eyes briefly flickered into deep, profound sorrow.

"Three days," Sofía whispered, turning her gaze back to Mateo. "In three days, I was going to walk down the aisle and vow to spend the rest of my life with you. My father invested five million pesos into your failing architectural firm last month as a wedding gift. My mother paid for a 400-guest reception at the Four Seasons. And all this time... you were hiding a newborn son."

"Sofía, baby, please," Mateo fell to his knees, literally grabbing the hem of her designer skirt. "I love you. The firm needs that investment, you know that! If your father pulls the funding, I'm ruined! I did it for us! I didn't want anything to complicate our future!"

"Get off me!" Sofía kicked her leg back, breaking his grip. She looked at Ximena, her expression hardening into something unreadable. "You think you're innocent in this, Ximena? You let him string you along while he was planning a wedding with me. You're just as pathetic as he is."

"I didn't let him do anything," Ximena said coldly. "I divorced him because he is a hollow, selfish child. If you marry him, you are signing up for a lifetime of lies. But honestly? Right now, I don't care about your wedding, your money, or your feelings. I just gave birth to my son six hours ago. Get the hell out of my room before I call security and have you both thrown into the street."

Sofía wiped a stray tear from her cheek and took a deep breath, pulling her dignity back around her like a shield. She looked down at Mateo, who was still groveling on the floor.

"Get up, Mateo," Sofía commanded coldly.

Mateo scrambled to his feet, a pathetic spark of hope in his eyes. "Does this mean... you forgive me? We can still have the wedding?"

Sofía smiled, but it was a smile devoid of any warmth. It was the smile of a woman who had just found a weapon.

"Oh, the wedding is still happening, Mateo," Sofía whispered, her voice sending a chill down Ximena's spine. "My family's reputation is on the line. I am not letting the media and high society say I was dumped or jilted at the altar. We are going to walk down that aisle."

Mateo exhaled a massive sigh of relief. "Oh thank god... thank god..."

"But," Sofía interrupted, turning her eyes back to Ximena. "There is going to be a change of plans. And Ximena... you are going to be our guest of honor."

Ximena stared at her in utter disbelief. "Are you insane? I'm not going to your circus."

"You will," Sofía said, pulling out her phone. "Because if you don't show up with that baby, I will personally ensure that my father’s lawyers use every ounce of their power to tie you up in custody battles and defamation lawsuits until you are completely bankrupt. I will make sure you lose custody of that boy before his first birthday. See you on Saturday, Ximena. Don't be late."

With that, Sofía turned and marched out of the room, her heels clicking sharply against the linoleum floor. Mateo shot Ximena a desperate, warning look before sprinting out after his fiancée.

Ximena was left alone in the heavy silence of the hospital room. Her heart was pounding so hard she could hear it in her ears. She looked at Leo, who had just begun to fuss.

May you like

She reached out, her hands trembling violently, and pulled her son to her chest. She had thought getting a divorce was the end of her nightmare with Mateo.

But as she stared at the empty doorway, she realized the nightmare was only just beginning.
