Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF JUSTICE

Hook: Six months later, a high-profile trial reveals a final, terrifying secret. Who was the real mastermind behind the multi-million-dollar scam?Six months had passed since the scandalous "Altar Arrest" shook Mexico City's high society. The media had dubbed it the "Wedding of the Century's Sins," and the public couldn't get enough of the details.
Ximena sat in the back of the federal courtroom, gently bouncing a now chubby, six-month-old Leo on her lap. He was smiling, completely oblivious to the gravity of the room around him. Ximena looked healthy, strong, and at peace. She had started her own freelance consulting business, and without Mateo’s toxic presence dragging her down, her life had flourished.
Today was the final sentencing hearing for Mateo Silva and Sofía De la Vega.
The courtroom doors opened, and the defendants were led in, wearing beige prison jumpsuits. Mateo looked completely broken. His hair was unkempt, he had lost significant weight, and the arrogant smirk he used to wear was permanently gone. Sofía, despite her jumpsuit, still tried to hold her head high, though the dark circles under her eyes betrayed her terror.
The judge slammed his gavel down. "We will now hear the final verdicts and sentencing in the case of the Federal Republic vs. Mateo Silva and Sofía De la Vega."
The prosecutor stood up, presenting a massive binder of evidence. "Your Honor, thanks to the extensive digital evidence provided by our primary witness and whistleblower, Valeria Fuentes, we have mapped out the entire scope of the fraud. Mateo Silva embezzled a total of 14 million pesos over a two-year period. Furthermore, the evidence shows that upon discovering the fraud, the De la Vega family attempted to black-market absorb the defendant's assets while framing an innocent civilian, Ximena."
The judge nodded gravely. He looked down at Mateo. "Mateo Silva, for the crimes of grand larceny, forgery, and federal tax evasion, I sentence you to twelve years in a federal penitentiary, with no possibility of parole."
Mateo buried his face in his hands, weeping loudly.
"Sofía De la Vega," the judge continued, turning his cold gaze to the heiress. "For your role in the conspiracy to frame an innocent citizen and attempting to conceal federal financial crimes, I sentence you to five years in a minimum-security facility."
Sofía gasped, clutching the defense table. "This is a joke! My father will appeal this! You can't do this to me!"
"Remove the defendants," the judge ordered coldly, banging his gavel.
As the guards began pulling Mateo away, he desperately turned his head toward the back of the room, his eyes finding Ximena. "Ximena! Let me see my son! Please! Let me hold him once before I go!"
Ximena didn't move. She didn't say a word. She simply adjusted Leo's blanket, shielding his eyes from his father's pathetic display. She felt no hatred left for Mateo—only a profound sense of indifference. He had reaped exactly what he had sown.
As the courtroom emptied out, Ximena walked out into the warm afternoon sun. Standing near the courthouse fountain, waiting for her, was Valeria.
"It’s finally over," Valeria said, stepping forward with a soft smile. She reached out and gently tickled Leo’s chin, making the baby giggle.
"I never got to properly thank you," Ximena said sincerely. "You saved my life, Valeria. If you hadn't sent me those files, if you hadn't called the feds... I would be the one in that jumpsuit today."
"You don't need to thank me," Valeria said, her eyes turning serious. "Mateo treated everyone around him like objects to be used and discarded. He thought because I was just his assistant, I didn't see what he was doing. He didn't realize I had access to his digital keys for years. When I saw him trying to set you up—the mother of his unborn child—just so he could marry into money, I couldn't sit back and watch."
"What will you do now?" Ximena asked.
"I'm leaving the country tomorrow," Valeria smiled, pulling a passport and an international ticket from her bag. "I took a job with an international non-profit in Spain. A fresh start."
"You deserve it," Ximena smiled, hugging her tightly. "Have a safe flight, Valeria."
Ximena watched as Valeria walked away, disappearing into the bustling city crowd. She took a deep, clean breath of fresh air, feeling a massive weight lift off her shoulders. She looked down at Leo.
"Let’s go home, sweetie," Ximena whispered. "It’s just you and me now. And we are going to be perfectly fine."
She turned toward the subway station, ready to start the rest of her life in absolute peace.
But as she reached into her purse to grab her transit card, her fingers brushed against a strange, thick white envelope that hadn't been there before.
Ximena stopped on the sidewalk. She pulled the envelope out.
There was no stamp, no return address. Just her name written in an elegant, unfamiliar handwriting.
With a growing sense of unease, Ximena tore open the envelope. Inside was a single printed bank statement from a private, offshore account in the Cayman Islands.
The account holder name: Ximena Silva & Leo Silva (Trust Account). The current balance: $2,500,000 USD.
Attached to the statement was a small sticky note with a typed message:
> "Mateo didn't just embezzle 14 million pesos. He embezzled much more. This is Leo’s true child support, legally washed and secured. Valeria didn't do this just out of the goodness of her heart. Consider this our little secret. Live a beautiful life."
Ximena’s blood ran completely cold. She looked back toward the direction Valeria had walked, but the woman was long gone.
