Chapter 3 - THE HIGH-SOCIETY SNARE

Hook: The bells are ringing, the paparazzi are waiting, and Ximena walks into the lions' den holding a ticking time bomb. The Exiatorio de la Santa Cruz was one of the most exclusive, historic churches in Mexico City. Today, its grand stone steps were covered in a lavish red carpet, flanked by dozens of paparazzi, security guards, and high-society gossip columnists.
A sleek black Uber pulled up to the curb a block away from the media circus. The door opened, and Ximena stepped out.
She looked radiant, defying the fact that she had given birth less than four days ago. She wore a beautifully tailored, flowy black midi-dress that masked her postpartum wrap, her hair fell in elegant waves over her shoulders, and dark sunglasses hid the tired lines around her eyes. Strapped securely to her chest in a sleek, luxury baby carrier was Leo, sleeping peacefully under a light silk canopy.
In her right hand, she clutched a small, elegant evening clutch. Inside it was a sleek metallic flash drive containing the evidence that could destroy every person inside that church.
As she walked up to the security checkpoint at the entrance of the church, a burly guard blocked her path. "Invitation, please. This is a private event."
"I don't have a paper invitation," Ximena said smoothly, sliding her sunglasses down her nose. "But tell Sofía De la Vega that Ximena and Leo have arrived."
The guard’s walkie-talkie buzzed instantly. A voice from the other end crackled: “Let her in. Bring her directly to the front row.”
The guard stepped aside, his eyes lingering with shock on the newborn baby strapped to her chest.
Ximena walked through the heavy wooden doors into the sanctuary. The church was a breathtaking display of wealth—thousands of white orchids lined the aisles, the scent of expensive incense filled the air, and hundreds of wealthy guests dressed in haute couture whispered among themselves.
As Ximena walked down the center aisle, the whispers suddenly ceased.
A ripple of shock passed through the pews. Society pages knew who Ximena was—they remembered the quiet, sudden divorce of Mateo from his first wife. Seeing her walk into his second wedding, looking stunning and holding a newborn baby, was the ultimate scandal.
"Is that his ex-wife?" a woman in a diamond necklace whispered loudly. "Look at the baby! Oh my god, is it his?" another whispered.
Ximena kept her head held high, her eyes fixed on the altar. Standing there, looking incredibly handsome but visibly sweating in a bespoke tuxedo, was Mateo. When his eyes met Ximena’s, he choked on his own breath. He gripped the edge of the altar to steady himself. He looked terrified.
Sitting in the absolute front row, on the bride's side, was Alejandro De la Vega, the powerful patriarch. He turned his head and stared at Ximena with cold, calculating eyes. He didn't look surprised; he looked like a predator watching a prey animal walk into a cage.
The usher guided Ximena to the very front pew on the groom's side, placing her directly across from Alejandro and right in front of Mateo.
Just then, the grand pipe organ began to play the traditional wedding march.
The guests stood up and turned toward the back of the church. The heavy doors opened once more, and Sofía appeared. She was the picture of bridal perfection—a custom-made lace gown with a twelve-foot train, a diamond tiara catching the light, and a heavy veil covering her face. She walked down the aisle with absolute grace, her arm looped through her brother’s, since her father was already seated.
As she reached the altar, Mateo stepped forward to take her hand. His fingers were shaking so violently he almost dropped her bouquet.
Sofía turned slightly, looking directly at Ximena through her sheer veil. She nodded, a subtle, triumphant gesture.
The priest stepped forward, clearing his throat to begin the ceremony. "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the sight of God to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony..."
Ximena sat silently, her hand resting over Leo’s head. She could feel the flash drive burning through the fabric of her clutch. She knew she had to wait for the reception to expose the fraud documents, as instructed by the anonymous caller. The church was too sacred, too public for a digital projection. She needed to wait until everyone was trapped in the reception hall.
"...If any person can show just cause why they may not be lawfully joined together," the priest’s voice echoed through the massive stone sanctuary, "let them now speak, or else forever hold their peace."
The standard, formal pause followed. The priest prepared to turn the page of his text.
But before he could speak, a voice rang out from the back of the church, amplified by a megaphone.
"I OBJECT!"
The entire congregation gasped, turning around in unison. Ximena’s heart skipped a beat. Standing at the entrance of the church was a squad of six uniformed federal police officers, led by a man in a sharp grey suit holding an arrest warrant.

The anonymous caller had lied. They hadn't wanted Ximena to wait until the reception.
They had just used her as bait to trap everyone in one room.
