Chapter 4 - The Golden CageBy nightfall, Madison and Sarah were in the penthouse of the tallest building in Denver. It was a world of marble, glass, and security guards who looked like statues.

But Adam wasn't the man Sarah remembered. He was colder, harder. He had spent seven years building an empire, and he didn't like being kept in the dark.

“Why, Sarah?” Adam asked, standing by the panoramic window as the city lights flickered below. “I searched for you. You disappeared without a trace. You let me believe you had run off with someone else.”

“I was scared, Adam,” Sarah said, sitting on the edge of a velvet sofa, still smelling of the dumpster. “Your family... they told me you were too big for a girl like me. They promised you would never marry me, that you’d lose your inheritance. I left so you could have the life you were born for.”

“And you chose him?” Adam gestured toward the room where security was debriefing Rick. “You chose that monster over me?”
