CHAPTER 1 — THE DOG WHO WOULDN'T MOVE

The airport was louder than usual that morning.
Families rushed toward departure gates.
Business travelers balanced coffee cups and laptops.
Children pressed their faces against giant windows, watching planes rise into the cloudy sky.
Everything seemed ordinary.
Until people noticed the soldier.
At first, nobody paid much attention.
A young man in military uniform was lying on the floor near a quiet corner of Terminal C.
His duffel bag rested beside him.
A faded blanket was spread beneath his body.
His eyes were closed.
His face looked unnaturally pale.
And beside him sat a German shepherd.
A huge one.
Alert.
Motionless.
Watching everyone.
The dog's ears twitched at every sound.
Her eyes followed every passerby.
When a woman carrying a suitcase accidentally stepped too close, the shepherd instantly stood up.
A low growl escaped her throat.
The woman jumped backward.
"Whoa!"
People stopped.
More people gathered.
Phones appeared.
Within minutes, dozens of travelers were staring.
The dog wasn't attacking anyone.
She wasn't barking wildly.
She simply refused to let anyone approach the soldier.
An airport employee cautiously stepped forward.
"Easy girl..."
The shepherd immediately placed herself between him and the man.
Growling.
Warning.
Protecting.
The employee backed away.
"Something's wrong."
Security arrived a few minutes later.
Two officers approached carefully.
Again, the dog blocked them.
Again, the growling started.
The crowd grew larger.
Rumors spread quickly.
"Maybe he's dangerous."
"Maybe he's drunk."
"Maybe he's sick."
"Maybe the dog is aggressive."
No one knew.
But everyone kept watching.
Then an elderly woman standing near the back suddenly spoke.
Her voice trembled.
"I think that soldier needs help."
For a brief moment, silence fell.
Everyone looked toward the man again.
He wasn't moving.
Not at all.
And that's when several people noticed something terrifying.
His chest was barely rising.
Barely.
One of the officers immediately called for airport medical personnel.
But there was a problem.
Nobody could reach him.
Not with the dog standing guard.
The shepherd sat beside him again.
Never taking her eyes off the crowd.
As if she knew something nobody else did.
And she was desperately trying to protect him from it.
Nobody in the terminal could have imagined what had happened before they arrived.
May you like
Or why the dog had spent the entire night refusing to leave his side.
Because just twelve hours earlier, the young soldier had made a decision that nearly cost him everything...
