CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET THEY DIDN'T KNOW

His name was Staff Sergeant Ethan Walker.

Twenty-eight years old.

Recently returned from overseas deployment.

Decorated.

Respected.

Broken.

But nobody at the airport knew that.

They only saw a soldier sleeping on the floor.

What they didn't know was that Ethan had been fighting a battle no one could see.

Three months earlier, he had returned home after losing several members of his unit during a devastating mission.

The memories followed him everywhere.

Nightmares.

Panic attacks.

Sleepless nights.

Guilt.

The kind of guilt that slowly eats a person alive.

His only lifeline had become Luna.

The German shepherd beside him.

Not an ordinary dog.

A specially trained service dog assigned to veterans suffering from severe trauma.

Luna could detect panic attacks before they happened.

She could recognize changes in breathing.

Heart rate.

Stress levels.

Sometimes even before Ethan noticed them himself.

She had saved him dozens of times.

But the night before the airport incident was different.

Ethan had been traveling home to visit his mother.

A trip he almost canceled.

At the airport hotel, he hadn't slept.

Not even one hour.

The nightmares returned stronger than ever.

The faces of his fallen friends haunted him.

By dawn, he was exhausted.

Physically.

Emotionally.

Mentally.

He checked out of the hotel and entered the terminal.

Trying to stay calm.

Trying to stay strong.

Trying not to fall apart in public.

Then it happened.

Near Terminal C, Ethan suddenly felt dizzy.

His vision blurred.

His chest tightened.

The beginning of a severe medical crisis.

Luna noticed immediately.

She nudged his hand.

No response.

She barked softly.

Nothing.

Within seconds, Ethan collapsed.

The shepherd reacted instantly.

Years of training took over.

She positioned herself beside him.

Kept him on his side.

Protected his airway.

And most importantly...

Prevented strangers from crowding around him.

The problem was that nobody understood what she was doing.

People thought she was guarding him aggressively.

But Luna wasn't protecting people from Ethan.

She was protecting Ethan from chaos.

The noise.

The crowd.

The confusion.

Everything that could make the situation worse.

For hours she remained there.

Without food.

Without water.

Without rest.

Waiting.

Watching.

Protecting.

But now Ethan's condition was deteriorating.

And time was running out.

Medical personnel finally arrived.

The lead paramedic studied Luna carefully.

Then his eyes widened.

"I know this behavior."

The crowd fell silent.

The paramedic slowly removed his badge and crouched several feet away.

Then he spoke words nobody expected.

"Good girl, Luna."

The dog froze.

Her ears lifted.

The crowd gasped.

May you like

How did he know her name?

The answer would leave everyone speechless.
