Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Thomas FinchThe police station smelled of stale coffee, industrial floor cleaner, and rain.

It was 3:00 AM. Chloe and I sat wrapped in heavy wool police blankets in a private interrogation room. Detective Sarah Miller, a sharp-eyed woman with silver-streaked hair and a hardened posture, pushed two paper cups of hot chocolate toward us.

"Arthur Vance’s lawyers are already downstairs," Detective Miller said, pulling out a steel chair and sitting across from us. "They brought a team of four attorneys. They're demanding his immediate release on bail, claiming a misunderstanding and alleging that you girls have a history of severe psychiatric episodes."

Chloe slammed her mug down, hot liquid sloshing over the brim. "Look at our faces! Look at our ribs! We have fractures! How can they call this a psychiatric episode?!"

"I know, Chloe. I see it," Miller said gently, her expression softening. "And the doctor's medical report confirms defense wounds and blunt force trauma consistent with assault. But Arthur Vance holds enormous sway in this city. He’s funded judicial campaigns. Your mother just gave a signed statement claiming you girls attacked Arthur in a psychotic fit, and he acted in self-defense."

I leaned forward, the blanket slipping from my shoulders. "What about the recordings? I gave the police the cloud access link."

Detective Miller’s face darkened. She looked toward the two-way mirror, then leaned in closer, lowering her voice. "That’s why I came in here personally, Maya. The cloud link you provided... it’s empty."

My heart stopped. "What? No! That's impossible! I checked it before he rendered me unconscious! Every file was syncing live!"

"When my cyber crimes unit accessed the server twenty minutes ago, the entire cloud drive had been wiped clean," Miller explained, watching my reaction carefully. "Not just deleted—overwritten with zero-byte data. It’s a military-grade wipe. A high-schooler hiding an old phone couldn't have triggered that wipe. Neither could Arthur from the back of a police cruiser without his device."

Chloe turned to me, horror dawning on her face. "Maya... the text message we got at the hospital..."

"What text message?" Miller asked instantly.

I pulled out the burner phone the paramedic had salvaged from my jacket pocket and handed it to Miller. She read the screen, her brow furrowing deep into her forehead.

"Deleting the cloud won't save you, Maya. Thomas Finch's trust isn't what you think it is. Ask your uncle why he really left."

"Who sent this?" Miller demanded.

"We don't know," I whispered. "Our father died five years ago in a car accident. Uncle Julian left the country right after the funeral to join a private security contractor in Europe. He said it was too painful to stay."

"Your father, Thomas Finch... what exactly did he do?" Miller asked, tapping her pen against her notepad.

"He was a senior forensic accountant for Vance & Finch Holdings," Chloe spoke up. "Before Arthur married our mother, he was Dad’s business partner. They built a financial firm together."

Miller stood up abruptly, stepping over to a whiteboard on the wall. She wrote three names: THOMAS FINCH, ARTHUR VANCE, JULIAN FINCH.

"Fifteen minutes ago," Miller said slowly, "we received an anonymous tip on the precinct’s secure line. The caller didn't mention the assault. He gave us a set of GPS coordinates pointing to an abandoned warehouse near the docks—a property registered under Vance & Finch Holdings."

"What's in the warehouse?" I asked, a knot forming in my stomach.

Miller looked me dead in the eye. "A tactical unit just raided it. They found a high-frequency server rig actively wiping your father’s cloud drive... along with a hidden wall safe containing three forged passports, $500,000 in untraceable cash, and a document signed by your late father two days before he died."

"What document?" Chloe choked out.

"A confession," Miller said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "A signed confession from Thomas Finch admitting to embezzling $40 million from an overseas syndicate... and naming his brother, Julian Finch, as his co-conspirator."

The room spun. My father wasn't just a victim of a tragic accident. And Arthur wasn't just a abusive stepfather trying to steal a trust fund.

We were pawns in a ten-year-old war.

Suddenly, the interrogation room door flew open. A young officer looked inside, pale and sweating. "Detective Miller, you need to come out here right now. It's Arthur Vance."

"What about him?" Miller asked, reaching for her holster.

"His bail was just posted by an anonymous wire from Switzerland," the officer stammered. "And... there’s a man waiting in the lobby claiming to be the girls' legal guardian."

The doors to the main precinct lobby pushed open. Standing in the doorway, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, drenched from the rain, was a man we hadn't seen in five years.

Uncle Julian.

He looked at Chloe and me, his eyes dark, guarded, and filled with a terrifying truth.

"Get your coats, girls," Julian said, his voice cold as steel. "Arthur isn't the only one coming for you tonight."
