Chapter 6 - The Midnight Vault11:45 PM.

Rain poured over the city like relentless sheets of lead. The Grand Meridian Bank tower stood like a monolithic stone giant against the black sky, its marble pillars bathed in eerie floodlights.
The streets surrounding the financial district were empty. The FBI had quietly established a perimeter three blocks back, maintaining strict radio silence.
Chloe and I walked side by side up the massive stone steps of the bank. We wore matching black coats, our faces pale, our bruises stark against our skin under the streetlights. Beneath my coat, my heart beat violently against my broken ribs, but my hands were dead steady.
The heavy bronze double doors unlocked automatically as we approached.
Inside, the grand marble lobby was plunged into near-darkness, illuminated only by floor-level security lights. Standing in the center of the atrium, resting his hands casually on a polished mahogany cane, was Arthur Vance.
He had changed into a pristine midnight-blue three-piece suit. His hair was slicked back, his expression relaxed and victorious—as if he hadn't escaped a police precinct and threatened mass murder just hours earlier.
Behind him, tied to a marble pillar with heavy nylon straps, was Eleanor. Her head hung low, her face swollen, her body shivering in fear.
"Right on time, girls," Arthur purred, his voice echoing through the massive empty lobby. "I must admit, I was worried your Uncle Julian would convince you to be heroic. But self-preservation always wins in the end, doesn't it?"
"Where are the bomb triggers, Arthur?" Chloe demanded, taking a step forward.
Arthur tapped his coat pocket. "Connected to my heart rate monitor and a dead-man's switch on my phone. If my heart stops, or if I press this red button on my screen, the hospital gas main ignites. So let’s ensure everyone stays calm and professional."
He pointed his cane toward the heavy steel elevator at the back of the lobby. "Downstairs. The master vault awaits."
We walked in silence into the elevator. Arthur stood behind us, his presence suffocating. I could feel his gaze burning into the back of my neck.
PING.
The elevator doors opened into Sub-Level 4—a subterranean bunker of reinforced steel, security cameras, and thick vault doors. In the center of the hall stood the titan: a circular, ten-ton vault door forged from titanium and solid steel.
A glowing blue digital terminal sat beside the vault door.
"The trust matures in exactly three minutes," Arthur said, stepping up to the terminal. He pulled a silver revolver from his suit jacket and aimed it squarely at Chloe’s head. "Here is how this works. Maya scans her right eye first. Chloe scans her left eye second. Then you enter the master trust password."
"And what about our mother?" I asked, pointing toward the elevator.
"Once the $40 million hits my account in Zurich," Arthur smiled wickedly, "you can take your mother and leave. I have a private jet waiting at a private airfield. I have no further use for any of you."
"DIGITAL VAULT ACCESS AUTHORIZED. PLEASE ENTER BIOMETRIC SCANS." the synthetic voice from the terminal announced.
The digital timer on the wall struck 11:59:00 PM.
"Scan your eyes," Arthur ordered, cocking the hammer of the gun. "Now!"
Chloe stepped forward first. She leaned into the scanner. A bright red laser swept across her eye.
"HEIR 1 VERIFIED: CHLOE FINCH."
I stepped up second. I looked directly into the lens. The laser swept across my eye.
"HEIR 2 VERIFIED: MAYA FINCH."
"BIOMETRIC ACCESS GRANTED. PLEASE ENTER MASTER PASSCODE."
Arthur’s eyes flared with feverish greed. He shoved me toward the keypad. "Enter the code, Maya! Do it now!"
I hovered my fingers over the glowing metallic keys. 1... 2... 2... 5... 1... 9... 8... 1.
The screen flashed bright green.
"PASSCODE ACCEPTED. FINCH TRUST UNLOCKED. DISBURSING $40,000,000."
With a heavy hydraulic hiss, the massive ten-ton steel vault door slowly began to unseal, rotating open inch by inch.
Arthur let out a hysterical, breathless laugh. He rushed past us, staring into the vault with eyes wide with absolute madness. "Finally! It's mine! Everything Thomas built... it's all mine!"
He pulled his smartphone from his pocket, opening his Swiss bank app, waiting for the digital transfer confirmation.
But as the vault door swung fully open, the floodlights inside the vault snapped on.
Inside the vault, there were no stacks of cash. There were no gold bars. There were no bond certificates.
Sitting on a single pedestal in the center of the vast, empty steel room was a single, sleek black computer server—and standing right beside it, holding a silenced pistol, was Uncle Julian.
"Welcome to the end of the line, Arthur," Julian said softly.
Arthur gasped, spinning around, raising his revolver—
"WARNING," the vault terminal blared in a loud, automated alarm. "FINCH TRUST PASSCODE TRIGGERED EMERGENCY AUDIT PROTOCOL. ALL OFFSHORE ACCOUNTS FROZEN. TRANSMITTING COMPLETE TRANSACTION LOGS TO FEDERAL AUTHORITIES."
Arthur stared at the screen in absolute horror. "What... what did you do?!"
I stepped back, standing beside Chloe, a cold, sharp smile on my face.
"Dad knew you’d find the birthday code eventually, Arthur," I said. "That code wasn't the password to unlock the money. It was the password to trigger the Dead Man’s Audit."
Arthur’s face turned gray. The app on his phone flashed crimson with a single message: ACCOUNT TERMINATED BY FEDERAL INJUNCTION.
"You lied to me!" Arthur screamed, raising his gun at my face. "I'll kill you! I'll kill all of you!"
He slammed his thumb down on his smartphone screen to trigger the hospital bomb switch—
"SIGNAL BLOCKED." his phone screen read.
May you like
Arthur blinked in disbelief. He looked down at my wrist. The silver wristwatch Agent Vance had given me was pulsing with a bright blue light—a localized tactical frequency jammer, completely severing all radio, cellular, and Wi-Fi signals within fifty feet.
"Your trigger doesn't work, Arthur," Chloe whispered. "You have nothing left."
