Chapter 4 - The Safehouse ProtocolBANG!

The gunshot deafened the hallway. Sparks flew off the steel doorframe behind us.
Julian didn't hesitate. He tackled Arthur mid-stride, knocking the gun wildly upward as a second shot shattered the emergency lights, plunging the corridor into total darkness.
"RUN! GET TO THE PARKING GARAGE!" Julian roared from the darkness, the sound of fists hitting bone echoing against the concrete walls.
Chloe grabbed my hand, pulling me down the narrow fire stairs. We stumbled through the dark, our hearts hammering against our ribs, the smell of gunpowder and ozone filling the stairwell.
We threw open the heavy emergency exit door on the basement level, bursting into the damp, echoing parking garage.
"Over here!" a voice hissed from the shadows.
A sleek black armored SUV idling in the corner flashed its headlights twice. The rear passenger door swung open.
"Get in! Move!" a woman’s voice commanded from the driver's seat.
We scrambled into the back seat, slamming the door shut just as Julian sprinted through the garage exit, vaulting over the hood of a parked police cruiser and diving into the front passenger seat.
"GO! GO! GO!" Julian yelled.
The driver slammed her foot on the accelerator. The heavy SUV roared to life, tires screeching against the polished concrete as we blasted through the parking garage security gate, shattering the plastic barrier into a thousand pieces, and launched into the rain-slicked city streets.
I collapsed against the leather seat, panting for air, my whole body trembling. Chloe threw her arms around me, holding me tight as tears finally broke through her defenses.
"Who is she?" I managed to choke out, looking at the sharp-featured woman behind the wheel. She wore a tactical headset and drove with the ruthless precision of a getaway driver.
"This is Agent Vance," Julian said, checking the side mirror. "No relation to Arthur. Federal Bureau of Investigation, Financial Crimes Division."
"FBI?" Chloe echoed, pulling back. "You called the FBI?"
"The FBI has been investigating Arthur Vance for three years," Agent Vance said, keeping her eyes fixed on the rear-view mirror. "Not for domestic abuse, but for high-level international money laundering. Your stepfather wasn't just stealing money from your father's trust; he was washing illegal funds for a Eastern European syndicate known as the Vanguard Network."
"Arthur was their local manager," Julian added, turning around to face us. "Your father discovered it five years ago. He realized that Arthur was using Vance & Finch Holdings as a front to wash hundreds of millions of dollars. When Thomas threatened to go to the authorities, Arthur eliminated him."
"And our mother?" I asked, my heart sinking further into my chest.
"Eleanor was complicit from day one," Agent Vance said coldly. "She didn't just have gambling debts, Maya. She helped Arthur set up the shell companies. She signed off on the transfer documents that drained your father's personal accounts after his death."
The betrayal hit harder than any physical blow Arthur had ever delivered. All those years, every time we cried out for help, every time we begged her to stop him... she wasn't trapped. She was an accomplice.
"Where are you taking us?" Chloe asked, looking out the tinted window as the city skyline faded into dark, forested highway.
"To a safehouse outside state lines," Julian said. "The trust unlocks at midnight tomorrow—the exact moment you and Maya turn eighteen. Arthur needs your biometric authorization—your iris scans and signatures—to claim the remainder of the funds. Without you, he can't access the money, and the syndicate will execute him."
"Then let them," I spat, my voice dripping with hatred. "Let them kill him."
"It's not that simple, Maya," Julian said, pulling a encrypted tablet from under his seat and tapping the screen. "Because Arthur didn't just smash your micro-SD card back at the precinct."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
Julian turned the tablet toward us. On the screen was a live, high-definition video feed of a dark room.
Bound to a chair in the middle of the room, bruised, bloody, and sobbing uncontrollably, was our mother, Eleanor.
Standing behind her, holding a satellite phone in one hand and a timer detonator in the other, was Arthur Vance.
"He just broadcast this signal to my encrypted receiver," Julian said, his voice deadly serious. "Arthur left us a message."
May you like
Julian hit play on the audio clip. Arthur’s ice-cold voice echoed through the speakers of the SUV:
"Julian... girls... You took my money, but I have your mother. In twenty-four hours, the Finch Trust opens. If Maya and Chloe do not appear at the Grand Meridian Vault in person to unlock the accounts... I won't just kill Eleanor. I will detonate the explosives planted beneath the main gas lines of the city's central hospital—where Dr. Hayes and fifty other innocent people are currently sleeping. Your move, girls."
