Chapter 5 - The Bank of Blood and LiesThe clock on the SUV dashboard ticked down in bright green numbers: 14 HOURS, 22 MINUTES UNTIL MIDNIGHT.

We arrived at a secluded cabin deep in the Adirondack mountains just before dawn. Rain slammed against the wooden roof as Agent Vance deployed tactical jammer units around the perimeter.

Inside, the cabin was a command center filled with monitors, mapping software, and weapons crates.

"He's bluffing," Chloe said, pacing frantically across the rug, her hands clasped behind her neck. "He wouldn't blow up a hospital! That's terrorism! The entire government would come down on him!"

"Arthur isn't acting like a rational businessman anymore, Chloe," Julian replied, laying a blueprint of the Grand Meridian Bank across the wooden table. "He’s a cornered rat. The Vanguard Network gave him a deadline: clear the funds by midnight or he’s a dead man. If he knows he’s going to die, he will take down as many people with him as possible."

"Can't the FBI bomb squad search the hospital?" I asked, leaning over the blueprint.

"Agent Vance already dispatched two covert sweep teams," Julian answered. "The problem is the Grand Meridian system. The hospital’s gas main control panel is remotely linked to the bank's automated security grid. If Arthur triggers a manual override from inside the bank's underground vault, the hospital’s primary pressure valves will overload instantly. It’s an old industrial setup Arthur helped build ten years ago."

"So he holds the entire city hostage," I muttered, my mind racing. "He forces Chloe and me to stand in that vault, scan our irises, transfer the $40 million to his offshore account, and then... he kills us anyway."

"He won't get the chance," Agent Vance declared, walking into the room carrying two tactical vests and two slim silver cases. "We aren't playing his game. We’re setting a trap."

She popped open the silver cases. Inside lay two advanced biometric spoofing devices—contact lenses designed to mirror our iris patterns, paired with high-frequency frequency jammers disguised as elegant silver wristwatches.

"The Grand Meridian Vault requires three things to unlock," Vance explained. "First, the physical keys—which Julian has. Second, the dual iris scan from the Finch heirs—you two. Third, a secondary security key code that was set by your father before he died."

"A security key code?" Chloe asked. "Dad never gave us a code."

"He didn't have to," I said suddenly, a spark of realization hitting me like a lightning bolt. "The Christmas box."

Julian spun around. "What Christmas box?"

"The old phone," I whispered, looking at Chloe. "Remember where I found that phone three months ago? In the attic, hidden inside the box of old Christmas decorations Dad packed away right before he died. On the bottom of the box, there was a series of numbers carved into the cardboard with a pen."

"I thought it was just a serial number!" Chloe gasped.

"It wasn't a serial number," I said, my voice rising with urgency. "It was an eight-digit sequence: 12-25-1981."

Julian froze. "That's... that's your mother's birthday."

"No," I said, shaking my head firmly. "It’s not Mom's birthday. Mom was born in 1983. Dad carved 1981. That wasn't Mom's birthday... that was the date Dad and Uncle Julian’s older sister passed away."

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. His eyes filled with sudden, overwhelming emotion. "Sarah... our sister Sarah."

"Dad used that date for everything he truly wanted to hide," I said, looking straight into Julian’s eyes. "Which means Arthur doesn't have the final key code. Even if he forces us into that vault, even if he scans our eyes... he can't unlock the trust without that date. And he doesn't know it."

"Then we have the leverage," Agent Vance said, a grim smile playing on her lips. "We go to the bank. We give him the impression he’s winning. We buy time for the tactical teams to locate Eleanor and disarm the hospital bomb."

"No," I said, stepping away from the table.

Everyone looked at me.

"No tactical teams for Eleanor," I said, my voice turning to ice. "Arthur expects a trap. If he sees FBI intervention, he presses the button. Chloe and I go in alone."

"Are you insane, Maya?!" Chloe yelled. "He nearly beat us to death twenty-four hours ago!"

"And he thinks he broke us," I replied, grabbing my jacket. "He thinks we're terrified, defenseless little girls who will obey him to save our mother. That hubris is his only weakness. We use it against him."

I looked at my twin sister—the mirror image of my pain, my rage, and my determination.

"It’s time to stop running, Chloe," I said softly. "It’s time to finish what Dad started."
