Chapter 2 - Sirens in the DistanceBack at Maple Grove’s administrative office, chaos was already unfolding.

Principal Vance was sweating through his pastel yellow polo shirt. He had just received a panicked call from City General Hospital. Martha Bell, eighty-one years old, had suffered a severe acute pulmonary crisis right outside the school gates. Paramedics had fought for ten minutes on the pavement before loading her into the back of an ICU unit.
And her emergency contact file?
It listed no father. No mother. Only an outdated landline for a local church and a legal guardianship paper that had been tangled in family court probate limbo for three years.
"If Jonathan Hail finds out he's sitting next to an unregistered ward of the state with zero legal ties, our funding is dead," Principal Vance hissed into the receiver, pacing behind his cluttered desk. "Keep her away from the press! If the tabloids get a hold of this—billionaire adopts dying neighbor's kid—our capital campaign will turn into a circus!"
Rosa Alvarez, the veteran secretary who had known Josie since she was a toddler wrapped in a donated blanket, slammed her stapler down on the desk.
"Stop talking about the money, Richard!" Rosa snapped, her eyes blazing behind her thick-rimmed glasses. "Martha is dying in room four of City General, and that little girl is out there sitting next to one of the most powerful, ruthless men in the country, completely unaware that her entire world is about to implode."
"Go out there," Principal Vance stammered, pulling at his collar. "Bring her inside. Tell Hail there's... an administrative mix-up."

Rosa shook her head slowly, looking out the window toward the garden courtyard.
"No," Rosa whispered, watching the tall, imposing figure of Jonathan Hail lean down to whisper something into Josie’s ear, making the little girl give a tiny, genuine giggle. "Let him stay. For once in his life, Jonathan Hail is about to learn what a real human life costs."
