Chapter 4 - The Predator at the GateBy eleven-thirty, the Maple Grove garden courtyard was no longer a peaceful academic sanctuary. It was a media war zone.

Sensing a sensational human-interest story that blended immense wealth with systemic tragedy, reporters had vaulted the low brick walls, thrusting microphones past the school’s rent-a-cops. Camera shutters fired like machine guns.

"Mr. Hail! Mr. Hail! Is this your secret daughter?" "Is Martha Bell your former maid or your secret partner?" "Does Hail Global plan to adopt the orphan of Maple Grove?"

Jonathan stood up slowly, physically placing his broad frame between the flashing lenses and Josie, who shrank back, clutching her paper cap. His face went cold—the legendary "Hail Storm" expression that terrorized Wall Street competitors.

"Step back," Jonathan commanded. His voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the din with absolute, terrifying authority. The reporters instinctively recoiled a half-step.

"Mr. Hail, make a statement!" a reporter from the City Chronicle shouted, thrusting a recorder forward. "What is your relationship to this child?"

Jonathan looked down at Josie. She looked up at him, her eyes wide with unchildlike terror, whispering, "Are they going to take me to the cedar closet?"

That did it. Something snapped inside the billionaire’s meticulously ordered universe.

"Her name is Josie Lund," Jonathan announced, his voice ringing across the courtyard, picked up by a dozen directional microphones and broadcast live to millions online. "She is a brilliant, graduating kindergartener who earned a gold star in math today. And as for her relationship to me..."

He paused, feeling the collective breath of the media halt.

"...effective immediately, Hail Global Foundation is assuming full, unconditional trusteeship of her care, her home, and her future. If anyone touches her, or crosses the perimeter of her neighborhood again, my legal team will sue your publications out of existence before the sun sets."

A dead silence fell over the courtyard.

From the edge of the crowd, Principal Vance fainted into a recycling bin.
