Chapter 3 - The Secret in the AtticWhile the graduation ceremony limped forward—with children reciting poems about caterpillars and fluttering paper wings—Jonathan Hail found himself trapped in a plastic chair designed for a six-year-old, listening intently to a detailed review of Josie’s favorite stray cats.

"The orange one has a stubby tail because a car door got him," Josie explained seriously, her small hand resting comfortably on the arm of Jonathan’s expensive suit jacket. "Martha feeds him tuna. But only on Fridays because the cans cost seventy-nine cents."

Jonathan felt a strange, unfamiliar tightness in his chest. He was a man who owned skyscrapers, shipping lines, and algorithms that traded billions in milliseconds. Yet, the economics of a seventy-nine-cent can of tuna felt heavier than any corporate ledger he had ever balanced.

"Tell me about Martha," Jonathan prompted softly, his executive curiosity surprisingly piqued. "Is she your grandmother?"

"She’s Martha," Josie repeated firmly. "She found me when I was three. In the hallway of the brick building on 4th Street. My real mom... she went to the store for milk and never came back. Martha opened her door because she heard me crying. She gave me graham crackers and ginger ale."

Jonathan’s dark eyes narrowed slightly. "Social services were never involved?"

"They tried," Josie said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "A lady with a clipboard came twice. But Martha hid me in the cedar closet upstairs and gave me a flashlight and a picture book about bears. The lady with the clipboard never found us."

Jonathan stared at the child. An illegal ward. A ghost living in a crumbling tenement with an elderly woman whose only asset was a heart too big for her ribs. If the state found out, Josie would be thrown into the nightmarish labyrinth of the foster care system—a system Jonathan’s own corporate foundation occasionally donated to as a PR afterthought.

Suddenly, his phone buzzed violently in his pocket.

He pulled it out. It was a text from his chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance (no relation to the principal): Boss, we have a massive leak. A freelance photographer snapped you sitting with the Lund kid. The press is connecting it to the City General ambulance dispatch for Martha Bell. TMZ is running a headline: 'Billionaire's Secret Family?' You need to exit through the rear loading dock NOW before the sharks swarm.

Jonathan looked down at Josie, who was proudly displaying her handmade graduation certificate with a gold foil star.

Then he looked at his phone, typed a single word, and hit send: Let them swarm.
