The security guards on duty were drinking coffee spiked with harmless sleeping pills provided by an internal cybersecurity audit team led by none other than Lucía.
Inside the subterranean digital vault room, Renata sat before a high-speed secure terminal, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed.
Behind her stood Commander Garza, holding a portable hardware encryption drive.
"Are you sure about this, Counselor?" Garza asked, watching the data transfer progress bar crawl across the monitor. "If the federal banking commission catches wind of an unauthorized sovereign asset transfer, you could be disbarred."
"The banking commission won't catch wind of anything," Renata replied without looking away from the screen. "Because according to the corporate registry update I filed an hour ago under my legal birth name—Renata Vargas, sole surviving heir of the Vargas estate—these accounts legally belong to me."
A green prompt flashed across the monitor: TRANSFER COMPLETE. BALANCE: $42,500,000 USD.
Garza let out a low whistle. "Forty-two million dollars. You just wiped out every single offshore reserve Elvira and her family accumulated over thirty years of extortion."
"I didn't wipe them out," Renata corrected him, unplugging the hardware drive and slipping it into her jacket pocket. "I reclaimed my inheritance."
Just then, her cell phone buzzed on the metal desk. It was a encrypted text message from the federal prison warden:
“The verdict has just been read. Doña Elvira Solís has been sentenced to forty-eight years without parole. She is currently having a complete nervous breakdown in her holding cell.”
