Chapter 3 - THE GOLDEN CAGE UNLOCKEDHook: The Poison Inside the PrescriptionThe sterile smell of white linen and antiseptic filled Hospital General de Xoco.

Renata woke up to the steady, rhythmic beep-beep-beep of a heart monitor. The burning in her chest had subsided, replaced by a dull, aching soreness in her throat and arms. An IV drip was taped securely to the back of her hand, pumping saline and antihistamines through her veins.

Sitting in a vinyl chair beside the bed was Lucía, her face illuminated by the cold blue light of her laptop screen. Leaning against the wall near the door was Commander Héctor Garza, a veteran homicide detective with sharp eyes and a permanent scowl.

"Welcome back to the land of the living, counselor," Lucía said softly, closing her laptop and standing up to brush a strand of dark hair from Renata’s forehead. "The doctors say your system took a severe hit, but you're going to make a full recovery. The epinephrine injection I gave you in the hallway bought you just enough time."

Renata tried to speak, but her voice was a rough whisper. "Mauricio... and Elvira?"

"Arrested within twenty minutes of my entry," Commander Garza stepped forward, his voice deep and gravelly. He pulled a clear plastic evidence bag from his jacket pocket and set it on the bedside table. Inside was a small glass vial with a sticky residue. "Forensics searched Elvira's kitchen. They found traces of pure, unrefined peanut oil extract mixed into the dark sauce of your chicken dish. This wasn't cross-contamination, Mrs. Solís. This was premeditated poisoning."

Renata stared at the vial. A cold shiver ran down her spine. For three years, she had believed her severe allergy flare-ups were random strokes of bad luck—a misplaced crumb at a restaurant, a contaminated pastry at a café.

"It wasn't the first time," Renata whispered, the horrifying realization dawning on her. "Three months ago... I had a near-fatal attack at our anniversary dinner. Mauricio cooked. He insisted on feeding me himself."

"It was never an accident," Lucía confirmed, her jaw tight with suppressed rage. "And we have the digital receipts to prove it. Remember that digital picture frame in their living room? You bought it for them last Christmas, right?"

Renata nodded.

"Well, Mauricio didn't know that the firmware update you installed last month integrated an automatic cloud-sync voice recorder linked to your personal drive—the very same drive you shared with me for your work files. Every single word they uttered tonight, including Elvira's confession about the insurance and the debt, was recorded in crystal-clear high definition."

Garza leaned closer, his expression grim. "And that's not even the best part. We ran a background check on your husband's financial portfolio this morning. Mauricio didn't just increase your life insurance policy to four million pesos. He also took out a secret accidental death rider that specifically covered kitchen-related anaphylactic shocks. And get this: he named his mother as the primary beneficiary, while listing himself as the secondary."

Renata closed her eyes. The man she had loved, trusted, and built a life with for five years had treated her like a prize-winning racehorse—valuable only when slaughtered for its meat.

"What happens now?" Renata asked, opening her eyes. There were no tears left to cry. Only a quiet, terrifying resolve.

"Now," Garza said with a grim smile, "they play by our rules."
