Chapter 7 - THE UNINVITED GUESTHook: The Intruder in the DarkRenata held her breath, pressing her back against the wall of the dark master bedroom.

Through the crack in the door, she saw a tall silhouette enter the living room. The intruder wasn't wearing a police uniform or a burglar's mask. He wore an expensive bespoke tailored suit, moving with a calm, predatory familiarity that suggested he had the keys to the apartment—because he did.
It was Dr. Leonardo Rossi, the chief toxicologist at the private medical clinic where Renata had undergone her annual allergy screenings for the past five years.
Dr. Rossi walked straight over to the bookshelf where the digital picture frame had once sat. He ran his hand along the empty shelf, frowning when he found it completely cleared out.
"Looking for this?" Renata’s voice cut through the silence like a razor blade.
Dr. Rossi spun around so fast his jacket flared. His face, usually composed and professional, twisted into a mask of pure panic.
"Renata! What are you... the police said you were at your downtown office," Rossi stammered, regaining his composure with a forced, nervous smile. "I came to check on the apartment for Mauricio. He asked me to retrieve some personal medical files."
"Mauricio is in a federal holding cell, Doctor, and his assets have been seized," Renata said, stepping out from the shadows into the faint moonlight streaming through the window. In her hand, she held the steel lockbox and the vintage photograph. "He doesn't have the authority to send anyone anywhere. But you... you have a very specific reason for being here, don't you?"
Rossi’s eyes darted toward the front door, calculating his chances of escape. But standing right in the open doorway, blocking his exit with a service weapon resting casually in her holster, was Lucía.
"Nice try, Doctor," Lucía said, stepping into the apartment and snapping her fingers to turn on the overhead lights. "We’ve been tracking your financial transactions for the last forty-eight hours. Turns out, a humble toxicologist doesn't usually receive massive wire transfers from offshore shell companies linked to Elvira Solís."
Rossi’s face turned pale. He realized he had walked straight into a trap designed to draw out the final rat hiding in the walls.
"You didn't just run my allergy tests, did you, Doctor?" Renata asked, stepping closer to him until she could smell his expensive cologne mixed with cold sweat. "You were the one who formulated the slow-release peanut compound that Elvira added to my food over the last three years. You were keeping me sick so Mauricio could keep claiming insurance payouts for my 'chronic medical emergencies.'"
Rossi laughed—a high, nervous sound that lacked any real humor. "You can't prove that. Medical confidentiality..."
"Medical confidentiality doesn't cover accessory to attempted murder and international corporate conspiracy," Lucía interrupted, stepping forward and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around Rossi’s wrists with a sharp, satisfying click. "And thanks to the financial records we just pulled from your office safe, we also found the death certificate of Elvira’s late husband—signed by a certain Dr. Leonardo Rossi Sr., and countersigned by you as an intern twenty-five years ago."
Rossi stopped struggling. His shoulders slumped, and all the arrogance drained out of him.

"She owned us," Rossi whispered, staring at the floor. "My father, me... she had financial hooks in our family for decades. We were just following orders."
"Orders end tonight," Renata said, turning her back on him as Lucía led the disgraced doctor toward the exit.
