Chapter 2 - THE OPERATING ROOM OF TRUTHS

The sterile smell of antiseptic washed over me as the ambulance raced through red lights toward St. Jude’s Hospital.
"Stay with me, Evelyn!" Agent Miller shouted over the screaming sirens, holding my hand tightly. "You did your job. The whole Vance family is in custody. We raided their corporate offices, their Swiss holding accounts, and their private marina ten minutes ago. It's over!"
"The... baby..." I gasped, tears finally spilling down my cheeks. My hands remained glued to my belly. The physical impact of Julian’s fist had left a deep, horrific bruise, but the emotional terror was far worse. "Save my baby..."
"We're going to try, sweetheart. Hold on!"
When the ambulance doors threw open at the trauma bay, a team of ten surgeons and nurses swarmed my gurney. I was rushed straight into Emergency Surgery. Bright lights blinded me as a clear plastic mask was pressed over my face.
"Emergency C-Section!" a doctor yelled. "Abruptio placentae! She’s losing blood rapidly! Get the pediatric surgeon in here now!"
As the anesthesia began to numb my senses and pull me into darkness, the chaotic noise faded, replaced by the faint, rhythmically slowing beep of my baby's heartbeat.
Please, I prayed into the void. Take my life, take my soul, but let my child live.
Hours blurred into a haze of dark, freezing cold.
When I finally opened my eyes, the harsh sunlight was streaming through a hospital window. The room was deathly quiet. A thick bandage was wrapped around my abdomen, and IV lines were hooked into both of my arms.
Sitting in a chair beside my bed was Agent Miller, her face pale, holding a thick folder.
I tried to sit up, a sharp spike of pain tearing through my incision. "My... my baby..." I whimpered, terror clutching my chest. "Where is my baby?!"
Agent Miller stood up quickly and placed a gentle, firm hand on my shoulder. "Evelyn, calm down. Take a breath."
"Is my baby alive?!" I screamed, hysterical. "Tell me!"
"Your daughter is alive," Miller said softly.
A wave of pure, unfiltered relief washed over me so hard I began to sob uncontrollably. "She's alive... thank God... thank God..."
"She was born premature, and she’s currently in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on a ventilator, but the doctors say she is a fighter," Miller continued. Then her voice dropped an octave, becoming dead silent. "However... Evelyn... during the surgery, the chief of surgery made a discovery. Something that wasn't caused by the blow to your stomach."
I wiped my tears, staring at her in confusion. "What do you mean?"
Miller pulled a set of medical lab results out of her folder and laid them on my lap.
"When they performed the emergency C-Section, they ran a routine blood panel and genetic screening on the infant and you," Miller explained, her eyes burning with a dark intensity. "Evelyn... for the past three years, Julian Vance was secretly lacing your daily prenatal vitamins and drinking water with small doses of synthetic toxins designed to induce long-term reproductive failure."
My blood ran cold. The room felt like it lost all oxygen.
"He... he was poisoning me?" I whispered, my voice barely audible.
"Yes. He never intended for you to carry a baby to term," Miller said grimly. "He wanted you declared medically infertile so he could use it as grounds to divorce you under their family's strict prenuptial agreement—leaving you with zero dollars from his trust fund. Your pregnancy with this baby was an absolute biological anomaly. A miracle that bypassed his poison."
I stared at the lab results, my heart pounding like a war drum in my chest. The shock of his violence at the baby shower was nothing compared to the sinister, calculated evil of three years of slow, silent poison.

"And there's one more thing," Miller added, leaning in close. "Arthur Vance just made a phone call from his detention cell. He’s offering fifty million dollars to a high-priced legal team to get Julian out on bail within twenty-four hours—and they are planning to file for sole legal custody of your daughter the second she leaves the incubator."
Hook: I looked at the lab results, wiped the tears from my eyes, and ripped the IV line straight out of my arm. "Call the lead prosecutor," I commanded, my voice turning into forged steel. "Tell him I’m not just a witness anymore. I’m going to personally destroy them in court."
