Chapter 4 - THE SECRET IN THE SHADOWS

The anonymous text contained an address and an encryption key.

I knew going back to the Vance Estate was dangerous. The house was technically sealed by federal authorities, but with the Vance family out on bail, their private security detail was patrolling the grounds.

At 1:00 AM, wearing black clothing and leaning heavily on a cane to support my surgical stitches, I slipped past the outer gate of the massive estate with the help of Agent Miller, who met me in an unmarked sedan.

"This is insane, Evelyn," Miller whispered as we crouched behind the hedge near the glass conservatory. "If Arthur's private guards catch us here without a secondary warrant, anything we find will be inadmissible in court!"

"Arthur Vance didn't become a billionaire just through illegal trading," I whispered back, my breath misting in the cold night air. "He had a master key. A leverage book. He kept dirt on every judge, politician, and prosecutor in the state. That’s how they got bail so fast. We need that book."

We used my old keycard to bypass the basement security door. The mansion was dark, silent, and smelled of smoke from the flashbangs two days ago. Shredded decorations from my ruined baby shower were still scattered across the grand hall floor like dead leaves.

We made our way into Arthur Vance’s private study—a massive, oak-paneled room with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.

I walked straight to his massive mahogany desk. I pulled open the bottom drawer. It appeared empty, just as the FBI search team had left it.

"It's clean, Evelyn. The team searched this room top to bottom," Miller sighed.

"They searched for digital drives and paper files," I said. "They didn't search like an insider."

I reached deep into the back of the drawer, feeling for a tiny, raised bronze pin hidden inside the wood grain. I pressed it firmly.

CLICK.

A false bottom in the drawer popped open with a soft metallic ring.

Inside lay a thick, leather-bound journal and a sleek, silver USB drive marked with a biohazard symbol.

I pulled out the USB drive and plugged it into Miller’s encrypted military laptop. The screen flashed blue, demanding an encryption key. I typed in the code sent by the anonymous texter.

The screen unlocked instantly.

Files upon files appeared on the screen. But they weren't financial ledgers.

They were medical records. Clinical trial logs. Experimental drug research.

Miller gasped as she read the top document. "My God..."

The Vance family’s pharmaceutical empire hadn't just been manufacturing standard medicines. For the past seven years, Arthur Vance had been running illegal, unauthorized human trials on low-income pregnant women across third-world facilities, testing a synthetic fertility suppressant designed for private defense military contracts.

And Julian’s mistress, Chloe? She wasn't just a twenty-two-year-old mistress.

She was the daughter of Dr. Victor Sterling—the lead scientist who created the compound.

"They didn't target you by accident, Evelyn," Miller stammered, her hands shaking over the keyboard. "Julian didn't marry you because he loved you. You were Patient Zero in their domestic trial. They selected you three years ago because of your rare blood type!"

A chill run down my spine that froze the blood in my veins. My whole marriage... my entire life with Julian... was a orchestrated laboratory experiment.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the study slammed open.

The lights flared bright white.

Standing in the doorway, holding a silenced pistol aimed directly at my chest, was Arthur Vance. Behind him stood Julian, his face twisted in a manic, evil grin.

"I knew you couldn't resist coming back, Evelyn," Arthur said coldly, raising the gun. "You always were too smart for your own good."

Hook: Julian stepped forward, pulling a syringe filled with a clear fluid from his pocket. "And tonight, Patient Zero finally suffers a fatal relapse."
