Chapter 6 - THE TRIBUNAL OF MONSTERS

Three weeks later.

The Federal Courthouse in downtown Chicago was packed to absolute capacity. News cameras were lined up outside for blocks. The "Vance Family Empire Collapse" had become the biggest media spectacle of the decade.

Arthur Vance and Julian Vance sat at the defense table, wearing orange prison jumpsuits and heavy leg shackles. Their legal bail had been permanently revoked after the attempted assault at the estate.

Beside them sat Chloe Sterling and her father, Dr. Victor Sterling, both facing multiple federal counts of illegal medical experimentation and grand fraud.

I sat at the prosecution desk alongside the United States Assistant Attorney. I wore a crisp black suit, my posture straight, holding my head high.

In the gallery behind me, my close friends and the real people who cared about me held photos of my baby daughter, Hope, who was finally stable and off the ventilator in the hospital.

The presiding magistrate, Judge Jonathan Reed, slammed his gavel down.

THUMP!

"We are here today for the preliminary sentencing and custody hearing regarding the infant child, Hope Vance," Judge Reed announced, his voice booming through the silent courtroom.

Julian’s high-priced lead attorney stood up, trying one final, desperate maneuver.

"Your Honor!" the attorney proclaimed. "While my client, Julian Vance, acknowledges his pending federal charges, the Vance family estate remains legally intact through corporate trusts! My client’s mother, Beatrice Vance, who faces no violent criminal charges, has filed for full emergency legal guardianship of the infant! A child deserves to be raised with the limitless financial resources of the Vance foundation, not by a mother who exposed her to federal danger!"

Beatrice Vance sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a black veil, trying to look like a grieving, innocent matriarch.

"The defense claims Beatrice Vance is an innocent party?" the prosecutor asked calmly.

"She played no part in any physical altercations or medical experiments!" the defense lawyer insisted.

I stood up from the prosecution table.

"Your Honor, I request permission to present evidence item 44-B," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the courtroom.

Judge Reed nodded. "Permission granted."

I picked up a remote control and pointed it at the giant digital screens installed throughout the courtroom.

"For fourteen months, while I was inside the Vance house, I didn't just record financial transactions," I explained. "I installed hidden micro-microphones inside the house's intercom system."

I pressed PLAY.

An audio recording filled the courtroom. Beatrice Vance’s distinct, icy voice echoed loudly through the speakers:

“Make sure Evelyn drinks the fortified water every morning, Julian. Once she loses this baby and is declared biologically unfit, we will invoke Section 4 of the prenuptial agreement. She will leave this family with nothing, and we will find you a real woman with status. If she resists, make sure her exit is... permanent.”

The courtroom erupted into total chaos!

Reporters gasped! Jurors covered their mouths in horror!

Beatrice Vance turned as white as a sheet, jumping up from her seat. "That’s illegal! That recording was taken without my consent!"

"Order! ORDER IN THIS COURT!" Judge Reed pounded his gavel furiously.

He glared down at Beatrice Vance with pure disgust. "Bailiff, arrest that woman immediately for conspiracy to commit murder and severe domestic poisoning!"

Four armed bailiffs marched down the aisle, grabbing Beatrice Vance by her arms and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

"Get your hands off me!" Beatrice shrieked, struggling frantically as her designer veil tore off. "Julian! Do something! Arthur!"

Neither Arthur nor Julian looked at her. They sat like lifeless corpses at the table, completely broken.

Hook: As Beatrice was dragged out of the courtroom screaming, Julian suddenly slammed his handcuffed hands onto the table, staring at me with insane, wide eyes. "You think you won, Evelyn?! You think you get to keep her?! You don't even know who Hope’s real father is!"
