Chapter 1 - The Cold Welcome

Brandon unlocked the door and stepped inside, tossing his duffel bag onto the entryway rug. He had a slight tan from four days out on the lake, a relaxed smirk resting on his lips as if he had just returned from a heroic voyage.

"Hey," he called out casually, shaking out his hair. "I'm back. Man, you wouldn't believe the fish Mike caught on day two—"

He cut himself off. The silence in the house hit him like a physical wall.

Usually, the living room was a war zone of baby swing music, discarded burp cloths, and the faint, frantic sound of me humming nursery rhymes while trying to soothe two crying newborns. But today, the silence was deafening.

Brandon froze. His smirk melted away as his eyes swept over the living room.

The house was spotless. The piles of laundry were gone. The sink, usually stacked with dirty bottles, gleamed under the kitchen lights. But more importantly, the double bassinet in the corner was gone. The playpen was gone.

And so was I.

"Sarah?" Brandon’s voice lost its easygoing confidence, taking on an edge of nervous irritation. "Sarah, where are the girls?"

He walked into the kitchen. On the island stood a single, neatly printed folder. Next to it was a set of house keys and his wedding ring—which I had taken off three nights ago.

Brandon snatched up the folder. On the front, in bold black ink, were the words: NOTICE OF SEPARATION AND PETITION FOR FULL CUSTODY.

Attached to the legal documents was a brief, handwritten note from me:

“You told me to act like a mother. A mother protects her children from absent, selfish men who pretend to be fathers. Don't look for us.”

Brandon’s face went pale. He yanked his phone from his pocket and dialed my number.

“The number you have dialed has been disconnected or is no longer in service.”

Panicking, he called his mother. "Mom! Is Sarah at your house? Did she bring Lila and Ivy over?"

"Brandon?" his mother, Helen, replied, her voice cold and distant—a tone she had never used with her golden-boy son before. "She isn't here. But her lawyer called me two days ago to secure my testimony."

"Testimony for what?!" Brandon yelled, sweat breaking out on his forehead.

"For your custody hearing," Helen said quietly. "I tried to raise you to be a man, Brandon. Leaving a nursing mother with six-month-old twins for four days to go drinking with your friends? You didn't just abandon your wife—you abandoned your daughters. I gave Sarah my lawyer's contact information."

Brandon stood frozen in the quiet kitchen as his mother hung up on him. The house he thought he controlled had completely collapsed in ninety-six hours.
