Chapter 5 - The Corporate Fallout

The courtroom defeat was only the beginning of Brandon’s nightmare.

Within 48 hours, news of the financial fraud and the affair reached the board of directors at Brandon’s firm. Victoria Sterling’s husband, the CEO, fired Brandon publicly, stripping him of his stock options and blacklisting him across the entire financial district.

Devoid of an income and facing potential criminal charges for embezzlement, Brandon was forced to move back into his childhood home with his mother, Helen.

But Helen was no longer the enabling mother he thought she was. She forced him to pay rent, do his own laundry, and face the reality of his actions daily.

One afternoon, three months after the hearing, Brandon showed up at the state-monitored facility for his two-hour visitation with Lila and Ivy.

He looked broken. His tailored suits had been replaced by wrinkled shirts, and deep blue circles hung under his hollow eyes.

I sat in the observation corner as the supervisor brought the twins out. When Brandon reached down to hold Lila, the baby didn't recognize him. She pulled back, crying, and buried her little face into the supervisor's shoulder.

"Lila, it's Daddy," Brandon sobbed, tears spilling over his cheeks. "It's Daddy, baby, please..."

He turned to look at me through the glass partition, his hands trembling. For the first time, I didn't see the arrogance, the contempt, or the cold indifference that had defined him for years. I saw a man who finally realized what he had thrown away.

He asked the supervisor if he could speak to me for two minutes. I agreed and walked into the room.

"Sarah... please," he wept, dropping to his knees on the linoleum floor. "I was wrong. I was terrified of being a father, I was greedy, I was selfish... I ruined everything. Please let me come home. Let us be a family again. I'll do anything."

I looked down at the man who had abandoned me when I was at my lowest point.

"You don't miss us, Brandon," I said gently, without an ounce of anger left in my voice. "You just miss the comfort of the life you destroyed. I survived the hardest four days of my life alone with those babies. You couldn't survive three months facing the consequences of your own choices."
