Chapter 7 - The Final Confrontation
The criminal trial of Brandon Vance for wire fraud, embezzlement, and attempted endangerment began in the fall.
The courtroom was packed with journalists, corporate executives, and onlookers drawn by the dramatic fall of one of the city's top rising financial figures.
When I took the witness stand, Brandon sat at the defense table, his hair messy, his eyes bloodshot, wearing a orange prison jumpsuit.
The prosecutor turned to me. "Mrs. Vance, can you tell the court what happened the night before the defendant left for his trip?"
I adjusted the microphone. I looked directly into Brandon's eyes—the same eyes that had looked at me with cold disgust six months prior.
"He looked at me while I was holding two screaming babies, completely starved and exhausted," I said, my voice echoing clearly throughout the courtroom. "And he told me: 'You wanted to be a mother, so start acting like one.'"
The courtroom was dead silent.
"He thought those words would crush me," I continued calmly. "He thought if he left me alone long enough, I would fall apart, fail my daughters, and give him everything he wanted. But what he didn't realize is that being a mother isn't about control or luxury. It's about sacrifice, strength, and protecting your children at all costs."
I stood up from the witness chair, holding my head high.
"He told me to act like a mother. And that is exactly what I did."
Brandon lowered his head into his hands, sobbing uncontrollably as his defense team tried in vain to quiet him.
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

The judge sentenced Brandon to 12 years in state prison without the possibility of early parole for financial fraud and reckless endangerment. Victoria Sterling received 8 years for her role as an accomplice.
