Chapter 6 - The Unexpected Revelation

Six months later, as the final divorce decree was being drafted, a unexpected twist emerged from the ongoing forensic audit of Brandon's finances.
Eleanor called me into her office for an urgent meeting.
"Sarah, the grand jury just returned an indictment against Brandon and Victoria Sterling," Eleanor said, sliding a thick file across her desk. "But there’s something else you need to see."
I opened the file. Inside were medical records from a private fertility clinic in Chicago, dated two years prior—right around the time we began our IVF treatments to conceive the twins.
My breath hitched in my throat. "What is this?"
"Brandon didn't just steal your inheritance six months ago," Eleanor explained, her voice grave. "Two years ago, when you were going through IVF, Brandon took out a secret $250,000 life insurance policy on you."
I stared at the paper, my blood turning to ice.
"The policy contained a specific clause," Eleanor continued. "It paid out double in the event of maternal mortality during or within one year of childbirth due to severe postpartum stress or physical exhaustion."
The room spun around me.
The sleepless nights. The subtle ways Brandon had discouraged my parents from visiting after the birth. The way he sabotaged my sleep schedules, pushed me to my absolute physical limit, and then walked out for four days, leaving me alone with two infants while praying I would suffer a nervous breakdown or worse.
He hadn't just been an unsupportive husband. He had been actively trying to break me physically and mentally, waiting for the exhaustion to trigger an accident or a medical emergency that would make him a wealthy, grieving widower.

My shock instantly burned away, replaced by an terrifying, unwavering clarity.
He didn't just abandon us. He tried to destroy us.
