Chapter 1 - The Trap Snares Its PreyBrett’s face drained of every ounce of color. The cocky, untouchable demeanor he had worn throughout our divorce vanished in a fraction of a second. Standing beside the clinic director, Dr. Harrison, my ex-husband looked less like a triumphant father and more like a cornered animal realizing the cage door had just slammed shut.

“Martin,” Brett stammered, taking a hesitant step backward. “What... what is this? Why is the Attorney General’s Office involved in a private family matter?”

“This stopped being a private family matter the moment a federal offense and state-level forgery were committed, Mr. Ashford,” Investigator Martin Keene said, his voice as calm and sharp as a scalpel. He pulled a pair of nitrile gloves from his coat pocket and slid them on before opening the thick dossier in his hands.

Eleanor found her voice, though it trembled with pure rage. “This is ridiculous! My son is a respectable businessman! Melissa carried that child! Lily is our family’s blood!”

“She certainly carries your family’s blood, Mrs. Ashford,” I said, stepping closer to her, holding my head high. “Half of it, anyway. But the other half? The genetic material that made that child possible? That belonged to me. The frozen embryo stored under Account #8802—the one you thought you cleverly erased from the clinic’s digital logs.”

Dr. Harrison cleared his throat, looking utterly terrified. “Investigator Keene, as I explained on the phone, our system suffered a server glitch during the transition to our new software last year—”

“Save it, Dr. Harrison,” Martin interrupted coldly. “We have already subpoenaed the hard drives from your secondary backup facility in Boston. The paper trail doesn’t lie. On November 14th—exactly fourteen days after Mr. Ashford filed for divorce—a requisition form was submitted to unfreeze Embryo 4B. A form bearing Mrs. Bellamy’s notarized signature.”

Martin looked directly at me, then back at Brett. “Only problem is, Mrs. Bellamy was out of the country in Toronto on a business trip on November 14th. Her passport stamp, flight logs, and credit card receipts prove she wasn’t even in the United States, let alone standing in a notary’s office in Portland.”

Brett swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically toward the exit. “It was a mistake... a administrative mix-up—”

“A mix-up?” I laughed, a bitter, ringing sound that echoed through the marble lobby. “You stole my flesh and blood, Brett! You and Melissa couldn’t conceive on your own, so you decided to shop in my inventory while I was grieving the death of our marriage!”

Suddenly, the glass front doors opened again. Melissa walked in, pushing a sleek black stroller. She was laughing, chatting on her phone, completely unaware of the ambush waiting for her.

“Brett, honey, the parking meter was out of—” Melissa froze mid-sentence. Her eyes swept from Brett’s pale face to Eleanor’s rigid posture, finally landing on me and the official badge pinned to Martin Keene’s coat.

“What’s going on?” Melissa whispered, instinctively pulling the stroller closer to her body.

“What’s going on, Melissa,” I said, looking down at the baby sleeping peacefully under the pink blanket, “is that the state of Maine is about to arrest your husband. And if you signed those forged intake forms, you’re going down with him.”

CHAPTER HOOK: As Melissa gasped and clutched the stroller, Investigator Keene signaled toward the glass doors. Two uniformed state troopers stepped into the lobby. But before Martin could read Brett his rights, Eleanor stepped between her son and the police, pulling a folded document from her designer handbag—a document that would blow the case wide open in a way none of us saw coming.
