Chapter 3 - The Custody War Begins“Stop her!” Dr. Harrison yelled.

The backup trooper moved instantly, blocking the hallway before Eleanor could reach the emergency door. Trapped, Eleanor clutched the stroller so tightly her knuckles turned white, her eyes wild with the madness of a woman who realized her empire was crumbling.

“You can’t take her!” Eleanor screamed at the officers. “She’s an Ashford! She carries our name!”

“She carries my DNA!” I shouted back, stepping between Eleanor and the trooper to protect the baby inside the stroller. “Get your hands off her!”

The trooper forcefully escorted Eleanor back into the main lobby, ratcheting silver cuffs around her manicured wrists. Within minutes, both Brett and Eleanor were loaded into the back of separate police cruisers outside the clinic.

Melissa sat slumped on the waiting room sofa, hyperventilating as paramedics evaluated her. Because she was the birth mother, the legal custody of little Lily was instantly plunged into a legal gray zone.

My attorney, Sarah Vance, arrived ten minutes later, briefcase in hand. After evaluating the chaos, she pulled Martin Keene and me into a private conference room.

“Clara, this is unprecedented territory in Maine family law,” Sarah said, placing a legal pad on the table. “Biologically, the child is 50% yours and 50% Brett’s. Surgically and gestational-wise, Melissa carried her to term. But criminally, the child was conceived via the unauthorized theft of your property—your biological material.”

“She’s not property, Sarah,” I said, my voice trembling as I looked out the glass window at the stroller where tiny Lily was now crying softly. “She’s a human being. A baby girl created from my pain.”

“I know, Clara,” Sarah replied softly. “But right now, the state views those embryos as stolen property. The immediate issue is custody. Brett is in jail without bail due to the forgery charges. Eleanor is facing felony obstruction and evidence tampering. Melissa is currently named as an unindicted co-conspirator.”

“Which means Melissa shouldn’t have that child for another minute,” Martin Keene added, leaning against the doorframe. “We just executed a search warrant on Brett and Melissa’s home. What we found in their safe raises this case from a white-collar medical theft to something far more dangerous.”

I sat up straight. “What did you find?”

Martin opened his tablet and flipped it toward us. On the screen was a photograph of several medical vials labeled in red ink, alongside handwritten ledger books.

“Melissa wasn’t just a recipient,” Martin revealed. “She was receiving massive wire transfers from Eleanor’s offshore account in the Cayman Islands starting six months before the affair even began.”

My jaw dropped. “What?”

“Melissa didn’t just fall in love with Brett,” Martin said, staring straight into my eyes. “She was hired by Eleanor Ashford to infiltrate your life, monitor your fertility cycles, and ensure that an heir was produced—with or without your permission.”

CHAPTER HOOK: Before I could process the sickening depth of their plot, Sarah’s phone rang. She answered, listened for three seconds, and her face went dead pale. She looked up at me and whispered, “Clara... the lab results just came back from the state forensic team. There’s something wrong with Lily’s DNA.”
