Chapter 6 - Desperate Measures“The tank is venting!” Nurse Sarah screamed, shielding baby Lily with her body as sub-zero fog swept across the room like a blizzard.

I couldn’t see two feet in front of me. The freezing air burned my lungs, but I drove myself forward through the blinding white mist, following the sound of Lily’s small, frantic cries.
“Sarah! Hand me the baby! Follow my voice!” I shouted, extending my arms into the freezing fog.
A pair of hands met mine in the cold fog, and Nurse Sarah transferred the bundle into my arms. The moment I held Lily against my chest—feeling her small, warm body shivering against mine—something inside me healed and ignited all at once. She was my daughter. No legal paperwork or court ruling needed to prove what my heart already knew.
“Out! Everyone out!” Martin Keene’s voice boomed through the lab doors as he burst inside, carrying an emergency oxygen mask.
He grabbed Nurse Sarah and guided us out into the hallway just as state troopers dragged a coughing, frostbitten Dr. Harrison out of the room. The cryogenic alarm was deafening, but inside the hallway, holding Lily tightly wrapped in my coat, everything went still.
Ten minutes later, the clinic was fully secured by local and state police. Dr. Harrison was placed in heavy restraints and led out to a police van, shivering violently and babbling confessions to avoid federal prison time.
Meanwhile, in the interrogation room down at the precinct, Brett Ashford was singing like a canary.
Sarah Vance walked over to where I sat in a private room, feeding Lily a bottle of formula provided by the paramedic team.
“Brett just cracked,” Sarah said, sitting beside me and rubbing her forehead. “The moment his lawyer told him he wasn’t the biological father—and that Eleanor had manipulated him his entire life—he turned state’s evidence against his own mother.”
I looked up, stunned. “Brett confessed?”
“Completely,” Sarah said. “Brett revealed that Eleanor knew about his affair with Melissa from day one. In fact, Eleanor encouraged it. When Eleanor discovered that Brett was infertile—something Brett kept hidden from you for six years—she realized Brett could never produce an Ashford heir to claim Richard’s $400 million trust.”
I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. “So Eleanor orchestrated everything.”
“Everything,” Sarah confirmed. “Eleanor convinced Brett to let Dr. Harrison perform the unauthorized embryo creation using his late father’s stored genetic material. Then, they staged the affair with Melissa, paid Melissa $500,000 to act as the surrogate, and told Melissa that the baby was legally Brett’s. Melissa thought she was securing a life of luxury with a wealthy heir. She had no idea she was just an incubator in Eleanor’s corporate fraud scheme.”
I looked down at tiny Lily, who had fallen asleep in my arms, her little hand wrapped around my pinky finger.
“What happens to Eleanor now?” I asked softly.

Sarah smiled—a cold, sharp smile of legal victory. “Eleanor Ashford is facing fraud, child endangerment, conspiracy, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement. But Clara... Eleanor isn’t going down quietly. She just posted her two-million-dollar cash bail.”
CHAPTER HOOK: Sarah’s phone chimed with a breaking news alert. I looked at the screen and felt my blood run cold. Eleanor Ashford had just released a live public statement from her mansion—and she was holding a signed court order demanding the immediate arrest of me for kidnapping.
