Chapter 2 - Unearthing the Betrayal“Touch my son and I will destroy this entire institution!” Eleanor hissed, waving the paper in front of Martin’s face. “You want to talk about signatures? Read this! This is a binding post-nuptial waiver signed by your victim over three years ago!”

Martin took the paper calmly, examining it under the bright fluorescent lights. I felt a cold surge of panic knotting in my stomach. A post-nuptial waiver? I had never signed any agreement giving up my parental or reproductive rights.
“Read section four,” Eleanor sneered, regaining her composure and looking at me with pure triumph. “It explicitly states that in the event of an irreconcilable breakdown of the marriage, all biological materials created during the union become the sole property of Brett Ashford to dispose of or utilize as he sees fit.”
Brett breathed a visible sigh of relief. “That’s right. She signed it during our second IVF cycle. She gave up rights to the embryos!”
Dr. Harrison wiped sweat from his forehead. “You see? The clinic acted in good faith based on the legal documents provided by the family!”
I stood rooted to the spot, my heart hammering against my ribs. Had I signed something in a haze of anesthesia years ago? Had Brett slipped a legal release into the stack of medical consents while I was sedated after egg retrievals?
Martin Keene didn’t blink. He reached into his coat, pulled out a handheld document scanner, and ran it over the paper. Seconds later, his secure tablet beeped.
“Nice try, Mrs. Ashford,” Martin said, his voice dropping an octave into pure ice. “This document is dated May 12th, three years ago. But the ink signature contains synthetic polymer additives—a formulation manufactured by PaperMate starting only eighteen months ago. Furthermore, the notary seal belongs to a stamp that was reported stolen from a credit union in Bangor last July.”
Eleanor’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
“You didn’t just forge a medical release,” Martin continued, motioning to the state troopers. “You manufactured a fraudulent legal document to cover up the theft of human genetic material. That elevates this to aggravated forgery, grand larceny, and conspiracy.”
Melissa broke down, sobbing hysterically. “Brett! You told me it was legal! You told me she gave them up! You said she didn’t want them!”
“Shut up, Melissa!” Brett yelled, his composure completely shattering. “Keep your mouth shut!”
“Don’t tell me to shut up!” Melissa shrieked, her voice echoing off the glass walls. “I carried this baby for nine months! I bled for this child! You told me her lawyer signed off on the transfer! You promised me we were safe!”
“So you knew,” I said, stepping right up to Melissa, staring into the eyes of the woman who used to sleep on my couch and call me her sister. “You knew the baby inside you was made from my eggs. You didn’t just take my husband, Melissa. You stole my child.”
“I wanted a family!” Melissa wailed, holding the stroller like a shield. “You couldn’t keep him happy, Clara! You failed as a wife! Why should those embryos sit in a freezer forever when I could give them a life?!”
“Because they weren’t yours to take!” I screamed, the pain of six years of betrayal exploding out of my chest.

“Brett Ashford, Eleanor Ashford,” Martin Keene announced, pulling out hand-cuffs. “You are under arrest for conspiracy, identity theft, and grand larceny of biological assets. You have the right to remain silent...”
CHAPTER HOOK: As the handcuffs clicked around Brett’s wrists, Eleanor did something unthinkable. She lunged forward, grabbed the stroller from Melissa, and sprinted toward the rear exit of the clinic.
