Chapter 4 - THE HIDDEN WITNESS🚹 SHOCKER: The Secret Figure Watching From the Shadows Changes Everything! The private notification on Julian’s phone buzzed with the persistence of a digital heartbeat.

He picked it up, expecting a follow-up briefing from Inspector Rachel Vance regarding Arthur Sterling’s holding accounts. Instead, the screen displayed a single, high-resolution photograph taken from a rooftop vantage point directly across from Hale Manor.

The timestamp read: 10:14 PM — Exactly five minutes after Bianca was cuffed.

The image showed the glowing infinity pool, the scattered red roses on the marble floor... and a third figure standing partially concealed in the heavy shadow of the second-story balcony.

A figure neither Julian, nor the security cameras, nor Bianca had noticed.

Julian zoomed in on the grainy silhouette. The figure was wearing a dark trench coat, holding a vintage Leica camera with a telephoto lens. But it wasn't the equipment that made Julian’s blood run cold—it was the distinctive silver signet ring gleaming on the stranger's right hand.

The Hale family crest.

An emblem that only three people in the entire world possessed: Julian, his mother Martha... and Julian’s older brother, David Hale.

David, who had officially died in a fiery private jet crash off the coast of Maine seven years ago.

The Ghost From the PastJulian stared at the screen, his breath catching in his throat.

Seven years.

Seven years of grief, memorial services, empty chairs at holiday dinners, and probate court battles dividing an estate that had broken his mother’s heart beyond repair.

Marcus Vance, who had stayed behind to help finalize the corporate security logs, noticed Julian’s sudden pale expression.

"Boss? You alright? Did the federal team find another leak?" Marcus asked, stepping closer to the conference table.

Without a word, Julian turned the phone around and displayed the photograph.

Marcus stared at it, his jaw dropping open. "Is that... Is that David? But the DNA match from the crash site—the dental records—the Coast Guard recovery report..."

"Was falsified," Julian finished quietly, his voice hollow. "Or bought."

Before Marcus could respond, Julian’s phone rang. Not a text message. A direct voice call from the unknown burner number.

Julian hit speakerphone and pressed accept.

"I see you finally got my text, little brother," a smooth, calm, deeply familiar voice echoed through the silent boardroom.

Julian gripped the edge of the table so hard the wood groaned. "David. Where the hell are you?"

A low, melancholic chuckle came through the speaker.

"I'm right where I've always been, Julian—watching you clean up the messes left behind by the people you trusted most. First Arthur, then Bianca... and now, the truth about why father's plane went down."

Julian’s eyes widened. "What are you talking about? Father's plane crash was a mechanical failure caused by faulty turbine maintenance!"

"That's what the corporate safety board wanted you to believe," David replied, his tone turning ice-cold. "Because if the world knew that our father was murdered to facilitate a multi-billion-dollar leveraged buyout of Hale Enterprises... the entire foundation of our family legacy would crumble overnight."

Marcus Vance stepped closer to the phone, his legal instincts kicking in immediately. "Mr. Hale—David—if you have physical evidence of sabotage, you need to bring it to federal authorities immediately. We can secure witness protection—"

"Federal authorities?" David interrupted with a bitter laugh. "Marcus, my dear lawyer friend, do you really think the SEC doesn't have deep-pocketed investors pulling their strings from Washington? The syndicate that Arthur and Bianca worked for isn't just a corporate cartel. It's an international cabal that owns half the regulatory agencies in this country."

David paused, letting the heavy weight of his words settle over the room.

"If you want to save Mom, Julian—and if you want to survive the next forty-eight hours—you need to leave the mansion immediately. Go to our old summer lodge in the Adirondacks. Look inside the false bottom of father’s old oak desk."

"Wait, David—don't hang up!" Julian shouted into the phone. "Why did you fake your death? Why stay away while Mom was grieving?"

"Because the moment they thought I was dead, they stopped hunting me," David whispered softly. "And started hunting you instead. Goodbye, Julian. Trust no one."
