Chapter 7 - BETRAYAL AT THE SUMMITđŸ›ïž SCANDAL: The Shocking Political Conspiracy Linking Wall Street to Washington! Before Julian could process the explosive names listed on the quantum drive, the heavy silence of the Adirondack lodge was shattered by a sharp, metallic sound outside.

Clack.

The distinct sound of a shotgun bolt racking into place echoed from the front porch.

Julian’s survival instincts kicked in instantly. He grabbed the aluminum drive case, shoved it deep inside his jacket pocket, and dropped low behind the heavy oak desk, drawing his concealed tactical sidearm.

The front door didn't just open—it exploded inward, splintering wood flying across the great room as heavy tactical boots stepped onto the hardwood floor.

"Clear the room!" a cold, authoritative voice shouted.

Three men in unmarked tactical gear, wearing night-vision goggles and carrying suppressed submachine guns, swept into the cabin, their flashlights cutting through the dust-filled air.

Julian stayed low, his heart pounding against his ribs like a sledgehammer. He couldn't fight three armed professionals in a closed room without cover. He needed to reach the rear exit leading down toward the freezing mountain stream.

He inched backward toward the hallway, his boot heel catching a loose floorboard.

Squeak.

"Movement in the study!" one of the operatives barked, swinging his rifle muzzle directly toward the desk.

Julian didn't hesitate. He lunged backward through the doorway into the dark hallway, squeezing off two rounds into the wooden ceiling beams to create an immediate distraction of falling plaster and splintered wood.

Bullets chipped the wall where his head had been a second earlier.

He sprinted down the narrow corridor toward the back kitchen door, pushing it open and plunging out into the freezing mountain air just as heavy footsteps closed in behind him.

The Unexpected RescueJulian scrambled down the steep, rocky embankment leading toward the rushing mountain stream, loose gravel and pine needles sliding beneath his boots.

A burst of gunfire cracked through the night sky, a bullet clipping the bark of a pine tree inches from his ear.

He dove behind a massive boulder, raising his pistol to return fire.

Before he could pull the trigger, the dark tree line ahead of him erupted into a coordinated flash of suppressive fire.

Rat-tat-tat-tat!

The tactical operatives pursuing Julian suddenly cried out, their flashlights dropping and shattering against the rocks as they scrambled backward in absolute disarray, taking cover behind the cabin porch.

From the shadows of the dense pine thicket, a familiar voice called out:

"Over here, little brother! Move, move, move!"

Julian didn't hesitate. He scrambled past the boulder, diving headfirst into the brush toward the source of the voice.

Strong hands grabbed his jacket, pulling him down into a camouflaged, trench-like dugout beneath an ancient root system.

As Julian caught his breath, looking up into the dim moonlight, he stared directly into the face of the man who was supposed to have died seven years ago.

David Hale.

Older, sporting a rugged dark beard and a jagged scar across his left jawline, but undeniably alive.

"David..." Julian gasped, clutching his side. "You're... you're really alive."

"No time for family reunions, Julian," David said urgently, handing him an extra magazine for his sidearm while keeping his tactical rifle trained on the cabin clearing. "They brought federal backup. Not local cops—federal strike teams taking orders directly from the Attorney General’s private security detail."

Julian pulled the aluminum drive case from his jacket, holding it up in the moonlight. "I found the ledger. Every single name. Including the Attorney General."

David glanced at the drive, a grim, humorless smile touching his lips.

"Good. Because that drive is the only thing keeping us breathing right now," David said, gesturing toward a heavily modified all-terrain utility vehicle hidden beneath a camouflage tarp fifty yards down the ravine. "And if we don't upload those files to every major independent media outlet within the next thirty minutes, we won't live long enough to use them."
