Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT AUDITThe study of the Mercer estate smelled of old leather, expensive bourbon, and absolute loneliness.

It was 2:15 AM. Outside, the security lights swept across the manicured lawns. Inside, Daniel sat at his massive mahogany desk with a dual-monitor setup glowing in the dark. Spread across the polished wood were medical files, financial ledgers, and institutional tax filings dating back six years.

His phone buzzed. It was Marcus, his chief legal counsel.

"Daniel? It’s past two in the morning. You woke me up asking for a forensic forensic-accounting audit of the Sterling Institute’s research grants. Do you know how messy that is? They handle millions in biomedical patents."

"I don't care how messy it is, Marcus," Daniel said, his voice dangerously low. "I want every wire transfer from my personal account and my corporate foundation to Dr. Julian Harrison and the Sterling Institute tracked from the day Noah was born. Every single dollar."

"Why? What happened?"

"Just do it." Daniel ended the call without explanation.

He clicked open a digital folder Emily had downloaded onto a encrypted flash drive before she packed her bag—though he had ordered her not to leave the guest house until this was sorted. The folder contained the raw, unredacted data from Noah’s original hospital admission.

Daniel scrolled down, his eyes burning from lack of sleep.

He found the initial muscle biopsy report from six years ago. The notes written by the attending pathologist—a junior doctor who had left the hospital a week after Noah’s birth—told a completely different story than the polished summaries Dr. Harrison had handed him over scotch and cigars at the country club.

“Sample shows signs of acute trauma during extraction. Re-test recommended. Patient shows anomalous metabolic response to initial calcium infusion.”

Beneath that note, in Harrison’s digital signature: “Disregard notes. File under Category A: Incurable Myopathy.”

Daniel slammed his palm against the mahogany desk. The sound echoed through the cavernous room.

He had paid for this. He had funded the very prison that kept his son strapped to a wheelchair. Every time he felt guilty about missing Noah’s first steps, his first words, his first day of school, he had written another check to Harrison’s institute, believing he was buying his son the best medical miracle money could buy.

Instead, he had been paying a prestigious medical mafia to keep his son paralyzed so they could harvest data on a rare, invented decline.

The intercom on his desk beeped softly.

"Sir?" It was Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, her voice trembling slightly through the speaker. "Miss Parker is... she’s in the east wing laboratory. She’s printing something out. She asked me to tell you that if you want to know why Harrison targeted Noah specifically, you need to come down right now."

Daniel didn't hesitate. He stood up, pushed his chair back, and strode out of the study.
