Chapter 4 - THE INVITATION TO THE BOARDROOMThe boardroom of Mercer Global Enterprises occupied the entire forty-eighth floor of downtown Chicago’s tallest glass skyscraper. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of Lake Michigan, shimmering under the cold morning sun.

Inside, twelve members of the board of directors sat in absolute silence.

At the head of the long obsidian table sat Daniel Mercer. He wore a charcoal-gray three-piece suit, his posture rigid, his face like carved granite. To his right sat Dr. Julian Harrison, looking distinguished in his tailored tweed jacket, adjusting his rimless glasses with a calm, practiced smile.

"Daniel," Harrison began, leaning forward with an air of patronizing concern. "I understand you’re under a tremendous amount of stress regarding Noah’s care. But bypassing institutional protocol and dragging unverified personnel into a clinical suite is entirely unacceptable. We need to discuss Miss Parker’s immediate termination—and perhaps a psychiatric evaluation for yourself."

The board members murmured in quiet agreement. Several of them shifted uncomfortably, clearly loyal to Harrison’s lucrative medical partnerships.

Daniel didn't blink. He slowly opened a leather-bound folio in front of him.

"Julian," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Tell me about the 2020 clinical grant titled Project Lazarus."

Harrison’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second—so fast that a normal person would have missed it. But Daniel was watching every micro-expression.

"Project Lazarus is our primary initiative for combating congenital neuromuscular degeneration," Harrison said smoothly, spreading his hands. "It’s funded heavily by your foundation, as well as federal grants. It’s saved countless—"

"It’s a fraud," Daniel interrupted.

The room went dead silent. A pin drop would have sounded like a gunshot.

"Excuse me?" Harrison’s smile vanished completely.

"It’s a financial and medical fraud designed to manufacture a fake incurable disease in my son, using him as a living anchor to justify billions in pharmaceutical patents and government subsidies," Daniel said, standing up slowly.

He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer weight of his presence commanded absolute terror. He pressed a button on the control console embedded in the table.

Behind the board members, the massive projection screen flickered to life.

Up flashed the unsealed autopsy report of Claire Mercer. Beside it appeared the bank statements showing millions of dollars funneled from the Sterling Institute into offshore accounts controlled by Dr. Julian Harrison and three members of the Mercer Global board of directors currently sitting at this very table.

"You audited my family," Harrison hissed, standing up from his chair, his aristocratic composure cracking entirely. "You arrogant bastard. You have no idea what forces you’re playing with. The institute owns those patents. We own the legal custody framework for Noah’s medical guardianship!"

"Not anymore," a crisp, clear voice echoed from the heavy double doors of the boardroom.

Everyone turned.

The doors swung open. Standing in the doorway was Emily Parker. But she wasn't wearing her nanny scrubs. She wore a sharp, bespoke navy blue business suit, her hair pulled back into a severe professional knot. Behind her walked two federal marshals in dark tactical gear, followed by the Director of the FBI’s Chicago Field Office.

"Dr. Julian Harrison," the lead marshal said, stepping forward with a pair of gleaming steel cuffs. "You’re under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, medical fraud, and illegal human experimentation."
