Chapter 6 - THE MIDNIGHT RAID ON THE STERLING INSTITUTEBy 11:00 PM, the neon lights of the Sterling Institute for Neuromuscular Research looked less like a temple of healing and more like a fortress under siege.

Black federal vans blocked the gates. Armed agents swarmed the lobbies, boxing in administrative staff and seizing hard drives before data-wiping protocols could be executed.
Daniel Mercer stood in the center of Dr. Julian Harrison’s private underground laboratory, watching federal technicians pack up rows of cryogenic storage units.
"Mr. Mercer," an agent called out, holding up a heavy steel lockbox retrieved from behind Harrison’s desk. "We found this in the wall safe. It’s labeled Project Lazarus: Subject 01 - Noah Mercer."
Daniel stepped forward, his heart hammering against his ribs. He took the metal box and popped the brass latch.
Inside wasn't medical paperwork. It was a collection of video cassette tapes and high-resolution digital memory cards, along with a handwritten notebook bearing Claire Mercer’s unmistakable handwriting on the cover: If found, give to Daniel.
With shaking hands, Daniel carried the box over to a functioning workstation, plugged in the memory card, and hit play on the first digital file.
The screen flickered to life.
It was a video recorded in this exact laboratory, six years ago, just days before Noah was born.
Claire Mercer appeared on screen. She looked exhausted, her pregnant belly prominent, but her eyes blazed with fierce intelligence.
"If you're watching this, Daniel, it means I didn't make it," Claire’s recorded voice whispered from the speakers, sounding so vivid it felt as though she were standing right beside him in the cold room. "And it means Julian put his plan into motion. He wants the gene-therapy vector I designed. Not to cure children, but to weaponize muscular atrophy as a permanent treatment loop—keeping patients alive just long enough to extract perpetual subscription revenue from their families and insurance companies."
Daniel gripped the edge of the desk so hard his knuckles turned white. Tears spilled over his lashes, tracking hot and fast down his cheeks.
"Listen to me, Daniel," Claire continued on screen, leaning closer to the camera lens as if she could look straight through time into his eyes. "Stop working. Stop running away from the ghosts in our house. Our son is going to need you to be a father, not a bank account. Protect him. Teach him how to stand. Don't let them turn him into a prisoner."
The video cut to black.
Behind Daniel, footsteps echoed softly on the concrete floor.
He turned. Emily stood there, holding a small, familiar pair of red leather baby shoes—the ones Claire had knitted before Noah was born, which Daniel had locked away in a storage trunk years ago.
"She knew," Daniel choked out, his voice breaking completely. "She knew she was going to die, and she tried to warn me."
"She didn't just try to warn you, Daniel," Emily said softly, stepping closer and laying a hand gently on his arm. "She left you a blueprint. Not just to take down Harrison, but to rebuild your life."
Before Daniel could answer, his cell phone rang piercingly through the empty laboratory.
He pulled it out. The screen flashed: Home Security - Nursery Alert.

Daniel tapped the answer button instantly. "What is it? Is Noah okay?"
"Mr. Mercer!" Mrs. Gable’s voice shrieked through the speaker, panicked and breathless. "Thank God you answered! Someone just breached the front perimeter! They bypassed the security gates, and they’re heading straight up the private elevator toward the east wing nursery!"
