Chapter 1 - The Footage They Thought Was BuriedThe silence in the hospital room stretched taut, like a wire about to snap under immense tension. Margaret Prescott’s pristine composure flickered for a fraction of a second, but she quickly smoothed her tailored Chanel jacket and let out a cold, melodic laugh.

"Security footage?" Margaret murmured, stepping closer, her expensive perfume clashing sickeningly with the antiseptic smell of the ER. "Colonel Hart, you seem to misunderstand how power works in this state. My late husband built the digital infrastructure for half the law enforcement agencies in North Carolina. If there is footage on our estate, it belongs to us. Any unauthorized access is a federal cybercrime. I suggest you tell whoever is on the other end of that line to delete it before they spend the next decade in a federal penitentiary."
I didn't blink. I didn't raise my voice. Decades in military intelligence and tactical command had taught me one fundamental truth: the loudest person in the room is usually the most terrified.
"Go ahead, Sergeant Major," I said into the speakerphone, purposely letting my voice carry across the sterile room. "Tell me what's on the feed."
Sergeant Major Marcus Vance, a man who had served alongside me in Afghanistan and now ran one of the most elite private intelligence firms in the Southeast, cleared his throat.
"Colonel, we intercepted the live cloud backup before their internal server scrubbed it," Vance’s gravelly voice rang out clearly through the phone. "At 14:00 hours, Emily was forced into the detached guest house by Ethan and Brandon Prescott. At 14:12, Ethan struck her across the face. But Colonel... that’s not the main threat. At 14:30, a black SUV with dark tint pulled up to the rear gates. Two men in unmarked tactical gear unloaded three heavy steel crates into the Prescott main vault."
Brandon’s face went completely drained of color. His arms dropped from his chest. "What the hell are you talking about?" he snapped, his voice cracking slightly.
"We ran the plates on the SUV," Vance continued, completely ignoring Brandon. "They belong to a dummy corporation tied to Vanguard Logistics—a firm currently under active federal investigation by the Department of Defense for trafficking stolen military-grade ordnance from Fort Bragg."
The air left the room.
I looked up from my phone, fixing my gaze on Ethan, who was suddenly trembling, his smug arrogance evaporating like dew in the desert heat.
"You didn't just abuse my daughter," I whispered, every word coated in cold steel. "You brought black-market military hardware onto a civilian estate while married to the daughter of a senior DOD official. You didn't just break domestic law, Ethan. You stepped directly into my theater of operations."
"This is ridiculous!" Margaret hissed, grabbing Ethan by the arm. "Ethan, call Judge Danforth right now. Have this woman detained for harassment!"
"Try it," I said gently, leaning over Emily to kiss her forehead before pulling her blanket tighter around her shoulders. "Because the moment your judge signs a warrant, my tactical team initiates a joint raid with the FBI on your estate. Let's see who gets arrested first."
Ethan pulled out his phone, his fingers shaking uncontrollably. But before he could tap the screen, the ER door burst open.
Two armed officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department strode into the room, their hands resting heavy on their holstered sidearms.
"Are you Colonel Sarah Hart?" the lead officer asked, looking between my dress uniform and the trembling Prescott family.
"I am," I replied, standing at full attention.
"We received a call regarding an ongoing assault and hostage situation at the Prescott residence," the officer said, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. "And we have orders from the District Attorney's office..."
Margaret smirked, regaining her footing. "Finally. Officers, arrest this woman for trespassing on my family's private hospital wing and making terroristic threats!"
The lead officer turned slowly toward Margaret. "Ma'am, the arrest warrant isn't for Colonel Hart. It's for your son, Ethan Prescott. For felony assault, kidnapping, and obstruction of justice."

Ethan backed away, slamming into the wall. "Do you know who my family is?!" he screamed. "My mother donates millions to your department!"
"Not anymore, she doesn't," I said softly, stepping between Ethan and my daughter. "Welcome to my world, Ethan. Here, your money doesn't buy armor."
