Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the SystemWith Judge Danforth led away in handcuffs, the entire legal shield protecting the Prescott empire began to fracture. But I knew that taking down a syndicate required striking at its heart, not just its limbs.

That night, inside a dimly lit tactical command trailer parked inside the perimeter of Fort Liberty, Sergeant Major Vance and I stood over a massive digital map of North Carolina.

"Colonel, we analyzed the three steel crates delivered to the Prescott estate," Vance said, tapping a touchscreen display. High-resolution infrared satellite photos popped up, showing the blueprint of the Prescott mansion. "They didn't contain weapons."

I frowned, tracing the red line of the estate's underground bunker. "If it wasn't stolen military hardware, what was in those crates?"

"Servers," Vance replied gravely. "Hard drives containing raw, unencrypted data stolen from the Department of Defense’s logistics network. The Prescotts aren't just rich socialites, Sarah. They’re running a high-end corporate espionage network, selling U.S. troop movement data and military supply chains to foreign buyers."

My stomach turned. Emily hadn't just married into a toxic, abusive family—she had unknowingly walked into a nest of high-level traitors.

"Does Emily know anything about this?" I asked, my voice tight with protective fury.

"She stumbled onto it," Vance said softly. "That’s why they beat her, Sarah. She wasn't just being abused because Ethan is a monster. She found a keycard to the underground vault three days ago. When she asked Ethan what was inside, he panicked, took her phone, and locked her in the guest house to silence her until they could figure out how to handle you."

A cold rage burned through my veins, hot and pure. They hadn't just hurt my child; they had tried to erase her to save their dirty empire.

"Where is Brandon Prescott right now?" I demanded.

"He just left the estate in an armored SUV," Vance said, tracking a blinking GPS signal on the board. "He's heading toward a private hangar at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. He’s got a flight logged for Zurich in forty-five minutes."

"He's fleeing the country with the drives," I realized immediately. "He knows the FBI is closing in."

"We can't get local law enforcement to stop him in time," Vance warned. "The state police are still panicked over Danforth's arrest. No one wants to sign off on a highway intercept without high-level clearance."

"Then we don't use local police," I said, pulling my military cap over my hair and grabbing my sidearm. "We use an active military intercept under Title 10 authority for federal treason. Mobilize Team Alpha. We take Brandon before he reaches that runway."

Twenty minutes later, three black unmarked military Spec-Ops trucks tore down Interstate 85, racing through the midnight rain. The rain lashed against the windshield like thrown needles as we closed the distance on Brandon’s speeding SUV.

"Target acquired," my driver called out. "Two miles from the airport perimeter."

"Block him in," I ordered.

Our lead truck accelerated, pulling alongside Brandon's armored vehicle. Through the tinted, rain-streaked glass, I could see Brandon’s terrified face. He swerved violently, trying to ram our truck off the road.

"He wants to play chicken?" I cold-laughing into my comms headset. "Execute PIT maneuver. Now!"

Our heavy armored bumper slammed into the rear quarter panel of Brandon’s SUV. The tires shrieked against the wet asphalt as his vehicle spun out of control, flipping twice before crashing into the chain-link fence bordering the airport runway.

Smoke poured from the wreckage. I stepped out into the pouring rain, my boots crunching on broken glass, my weapon drawn and aimed at the driver's side door.

Brandon kicked the dented door open, crawling out into the mud, bleeding from a gash on his forehead. Beside him lay a metallic briefcases locked tight to his wrist with steel cuffs.

I placed the barrel of my weapon directly against his forehead.

"End of the line, Brandon," I said, my voice echoing over the roar of the rain. "Give me the keys to the case, or I let the FBI figure out which part of you to bury."

May you like

Brandon looked up into my eyes, gasping for air, real terror taking hold of him for the first time in his life. "You... you can't do this... you're a military officer!"

"I am a mother defending her child and her country," I growled, stepping on his hand until he screamed and released the key. "And you just made the worst tactical error of your life."
