Chapter 4 - The Betrayal WithinBy sunrise, Brandon Prescott was in federal custody, and the locked briefcase had yielded mountains of encrypted evidence linking the entire Prescott family—including Margaret—to a foreign espionage syndicate.

I sat beside Emily’s hospital bed, holding her hand as she finally slept peacefully without waking up screaming from nightmares. The physical swelling on her face had begun to go down, but the emotional scars were deep.
Suddenly, my secure phone buzzed. It was an unlisted military line.
"Sarah," Vance’s voice sounded tense, unusually strained. "We have a massive problem."
I gently let go of Emily’s hand and stepped out into the quiet hospital hallway. "What is it, Vance? We have Brandon, we have the drives, and Danforth is singing to the federal prosecutors."
"The drives we recovered from Brandon's briefcase... they were a decoy," Vance revealed, dropping a bombshell. "The real data wasn't on those drives. It was uploaded to an external server six hours ago. And Sarah... the upload IP address came from inside Fort Liberty."
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. "What? That’s impossible."
"It came from General Richard Vance’s office," he said softly. "My brother's office."
The floor felt like it was shifting beneath my feet. General Richard Vance—Marcus Vance's brother—was my direct commanding officer. The man who had approved my emergency leave to save Emily. The man who had guided my entire military career for fifteen years.
"Richard?" I whispered, disbelieving. "Richard is in on this?"
"He’s not just in on it," Vance said, his voice trembling with anger and pain. "He’s the founder of Vanguard Logistics. The Prescotts weren't running the show, Sarah. They were just the money men. My brother is the mastermind."
Before I could digest the horrifying reality, the elevator doors at the end of the hallway chimed open.
Four armed Military Police officers stepped out, led by a stern-faced Lieutenant Colonel whom I recognized as General Vance's personal aide.
"Colonel Sarah Hart," the aide said, his voice ringing cold throughout the empty corridor. "By order of General Richard Vance, you are hereby relieved of command and placed under military arrest for unauthorized use of DOD assets, treason, and conspiracy."
I stood my ground, my hands naturally dropping to my sides near my holster. "On whose authority?"
"By authority of the Pentagon," the aide replied, pulling out a pair of military wrist restraints. "Surrender your sidearm immediately, Colonel. You are going to a brig."
I looked down the hallway toward Emily's room. If I let them arrest me now, General Vance would have complete control over Emily, the evidence, and the narrative. She would be completely defenseless.
I looked the Lieutenant Colonel dead in the eye and smiled a cold, dangerous smile.
"I respectfully decline," I said.
Before the aide could draw his weapon, I ducked beneath his guard, grabbed his wrist, and swept his legs out from under him, slamming him hard onto the linoleum floor.
The remaining three MPs drew their weapons, but I kicked the primary officer’s knee inward, disarming him mid-fall, and spun him around to use him as a human shield against the others.
"Vance!" I screamed into my earpiece as chaos erupted in the hallway. "They're shutting us down! Initiate Protocol Omega!"
"Protocol Omega acknowledged!" Vance shouted through the comms. "Get out of there, Sarah! I’m wiping the server base now!"
I threw the disarmed MP into his colleague, snatched the aide's master security pass off his belt, and sprinted down the emergency stairwell, fleeing into the storming rain of the military base.

I was no longer just fighting a powerful civilian family.
I was now a rogue officer at war with my own military command.
