Chapter 1 - THE FACE IN THE SHADOWSDetective Maria Santos tapped her fingernail against the glossy photograph spread across the metal interrogation table. The overhead fluorescent light hummed, casting a sterile, buzzing shadow over the room.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.
"Look closely, Elena," Santos said, her voice dropping to a low, gravelly whisper. "Karen Mitchell claims she watched you hurl the baby into that freezing dumpster. She claims she saw you try to murder little Emma Valente. But the forensic evidence, the residue of your body heat mapped against the infant’s clothing, and the angle of your footprints in the snow prove something entirely different."
She paused, letting the silence stretch until it felt heavy enough to crush bone.
"You didn’t throw her away. You scooped her up. You pressed her against your chest to save her life. But Karen... Karen was watching from the second-story balcony the entire time. And three minutes before you even lifted the lid, someone else was standing right beside her."
I looked down at the second photograph. My breath caught in my throat. The room spun.
Standing in the grainy, enhanced security still, illuminated by the amber glow of a distant streetlamp, was a woman with a familiar sharp jawline, wearing a distinctive emerald-green wool coat. A coat I had bought her with money I earned working double shifts at the diner.
It was Clara.
My younger sister. The sister dying of congestive heart failure. The sister who supposedly didn't know where I worked, who didn't know the Valente family, and who had no reason—and no way—to be lurking behind a multi-million-dollar mob estate in the dead of winter.
"How..." I whispered, my voice cracking into a dry rasp. "How is that possible? She was supposed to be at home in bed. She’s sick. She can barely walk across the room without gasping for air."
"That," Detective Santos said, leaning forward and resting her forearms on the table, eyes locked onto mine with fierce intensity, "is the exact question we are going to ask her. Because according to our intelligence, Clara didn't just happen to be passing by. She was meeting Karen Mitchell. And she was holding a heavy, zippered canvas bag that matched the weight of the sedatives found in baby Emma's bloodstream."
Clack.

The heavy steel door of the interrogation room flew open. A panicked uniformed officer rushed in, breathless and wide-eyed.
"Detective! You need to see this right now. Adrian Valente just bypassed county jurisdiction. His private security detail has surrounded the precinct. And he’s coming down the hall."
