Chapter 12 - THE SEALED ENVELOPEMaya stopped a few feet away, chest heaving, holding the heavy parchment envelope out like it was a live grenade.

"Elena, someone dropped this at the diner counter twenty minutes ago," Maya gasped, her eyes wide with terror. "The manager tried to throw it away, but when I saw your name and the red wax... I knew I had to bring it to you. The man who left it said it was from the real head of the family."
Dante was instantly by my side, his hand hovering over his holster. Adrian stepped forward, his dark eyes narrowing as he stared at the red wax seal stamped into the thick, cream-colored paper.
"That seal," Adrian whispered, a rare flicker of genuine shock crossing his iron-clad features. "I haven't seen that insignia in fifteen years. It belongs to the Syndicate Council's High Arbiter... a man everyone thought died in the 2011 Chicago harbor explosion."
"Who?" I asked, my voice trembling as I reached out and took the envelope from Maya’s shaking hands. The paper felt ice-cold, despite being indoors.
"Open it," Adrian instructed quietly, signaling Dante to clear a wider berth around us.
With trembling fingers, I broke the red wax seal and slid out a single sheet of heavy cardstock covered in sharp, elegant fountain-pen handwriting.
“Dear Granddaughter,
Marcus was only a low-level cleaner doing what he was told. The true war for Chicago has only just begun, and you, Elena, hold the ultimate key to the throne. If you ever want to see your sister survive her heart surgery tomorrow morning, come alone to the abandoned railway terminal at midnight. Bring the flash drive.
— Don Salvatore Vance.”
The room seemed to tilt sideways. My grandfather? The man my parents spent their entire lives running from, the patriarch of the Vance criminal dynasty who supposedly perished in a bloodbath years ago... was alive?
"Grandfather..." I whispered, the paper fluttering out of my numb fingers and landing softly on the marble floor.

Adrian looked down at the letter, his face darkening into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury.
"Salvatore Vance," Adrian hissed, his voice trembling with a deadly rage. "The ghost who engineered the war between the Valentes and the Vances thirty years ago. He isn't just alive, Elena... he’s hunting you."
