CHAPTER 4 — The Woman in the Waiting Room

The lawsuit should have ended everything.
But for Michael Carter, it only opened a darker door.
Two months after the fertility clinic scandal became national news, Michael received a letter with no return address.
Inside was one sentence.
“Noah was not switched by accident.”
Michael read it three times.
His hands turned cold.
At the bottom of the note was a location.
St. Helena Medical Archive — Room 9B. Midnight. Come alone.
Emily begged him not to go.
“This could be dangerous.”
Michael looked at Noah sleeping on the couch, still clutching his teddy bear.
“It’s already dangerous.”
That night, Michael drove through heavy rain to an abandoned medical records building on the edge of town.
Room 9B smelled like dust, bleach, and secrets.
A woman in a gray coat waited near a flickering lamp.
She was older.
Thin.
Terrified.
“You’re Michael Carter,” she whispered.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Linda Hayes.”
“I was a nurse at the clinic twelve years ago.”
Michael stepped closer.
“Then tell me the truth.”
Linda’s eyes filled with tears.
“The embryo switch wasn’t a mistake.”
Michael’s heart pounded.
“Who ordered it?”
Linda looked behind her as if someone might be listening.
“Your mother.”
Michael froze.
“No.”
Linda nodded slowly.
“She paid the clinic director.”
Michael staggered back.
“My mother wanted Noah?”
“No,” Linda whispered.
“She wanted control.”
Then she handed Michael a flash drive.
“Everything is on there.”
Before Michael could speak, footsteps echoed in the hallway.
Linda’s face went pale.
“They followed me.”
A shadow moved behind the glass door.
Then came the sound of a gun being loaded.
Michael grabbed Linda’s arm.
“Run.”
May you like
But before they reached the back exit...
the lights went out.
