CHAPTER 7 — The Vault Beneath the Mansion

Three weeks after Margaret Carter disappeared...
Everyone believed the nightmare was finally over.
The court had frozen her fortune.
The clinic director was awaiting trial.
News channels called it the biggest medical scandal in decades.
Michael wanted nothing more than to move on.
But then Noah found something strange.
Inside an old family photo album, a tiny brass key fell onto the floor.
"What does this open, Dad?"
Michael picked it up.
A small engraving caught his eye.
VAULT B-17.
The same symbol appeared on one of Margaret's handwritten journals that investigators had never been able to decode.
The next morning, Michael, Emily, and two federal investigators entered the abandoned Carter mansion.
The electricity had been shut off.
Dust covered every room.
It felt like the house itself had been waiting.
The key led them to the wine cellar.
Behind hundreds of old bottles stood a steel door.
Michael inserted the key.
A loud click echoed through the basement.
The vault slowly opened.
Inside were shelves filled with black binders.
Thousands of files.
Birth certificates.
DNA reports.
Adoption records.
Medical photographs.
Every folder carried a child's name.
Emily covered her mouth.
"Oh my God..."
One investigator whispered,
"These aren't family records..."
"They're victims."
For over forty years...
Margaret had secretly financed an illegal network that manipulated hospital records, fertility clinics, and private adoptions.
Noah had never been the only child.
There were dozens.
Maybe hundreds.
Michael suddenly noticed one final safe hidden inside the vault.
Unlike everything else...
It required both a fingerprint and a code.
Then...
The screen lit up by itself.
WELCOME BACK, MARGARET.
May you like
Someone else had just activated the system remotely.
They weren't alone.
