Chapter 10 - THE LAST HEARTBEATVictor spun around, raising his pistol toward the oncoming vehicle, but it was already too late.

The armored sedan slammed sideways into the dirt, kicking up a massive wall of dust and gravel that knocked Victor off his feet and sent his pistol skittering across the stones.

The driver's door swung open instantly.

Adrian Vale stepped out into the blinding light.

He moved with controlled, deadly precision. Despite the bandages strapped tight beneath his Henley and the fresh blood soaking through his left shoulder, there was no sign of weakness in his stride. He walked straight toward a scrambling Victor Vance, who was reaching frantically for his dropped weapon.

“Victor,” Adrian said, his voice a lethal whisper that cut through the desert wind.

Victor froze, looking up in sheer terror as the barrel of Adrian’s automatic rifle settled squarely between his eyes. “Adrian... wait. We can talk about this. The feds are right behind us—if you kill me, you’ll never get out of—”

Crack.

A single, muffled shot echoed across the canyon.

Victor collapsed into the desert dust, motionless.

Silence descended upon the wash, broken only by the distant hum of police sirens echoing miles away in the hills.

Detective Sarah Vance dropped to her knees, staring in shock at her brother’s body. She looked up slowly as Adrian approached her, his face carved from stone. He didn't raise his weapon at her. Instead, he simply walked past her, his pale gray eyes fixed entirely on Emma.

Emma stood frozen beside Mateo, her hands stained with blood once again—not Adrian’s this time, but the harsh, real blood of the underworld she had tried so desperately to escape.

Adrian stopped inches away from her. The harsh desert wind whipped his dark hair across his forehead. He reached out with his uninjured right hand, gently taking her trembling hand in his.

“Are you hurt?” he asked, his voice unexpectedly soft.

Emma looked up into those pale gray eyes—eyes she had pulled back from the brink of death just ten days ago.

“No,” she whispered, her voice shaking. “I’m... I’m not hurt.”

Adrian gave her hand a firm, reassuring squeeze. He turned his head toward the distant flashing lights of the approaching federal task force cars cresting the northern ridge.

“Come with me, Emma,” Adrian said, his gaze locking onto hers with absolute, unyielding intensity. “The game in Phoenix is over. But our story... has only just begun.”

Emma looked back at the flashing police lights, then down at the hand holding hers—the hand of the man who owned the underworld, yet owed his very heartbeat to her.

She took a deep, steady breath, squeezed his hand back, and stepped forward into the dark.
