Chapter 5 - THE INVITATIONEmma stared at the heavy wax-sealed envelope resting on her coffee table. The air in the room felt thick, charged with a danger she had only ever read about in true-crime books or seen in late-night thrillers.

“I’m a nurse, Mr. Vale,” Emma said, forcing her voice to remain steady even though her knees felt weak. “I take care of patients. I don’t get involved in syndicate wars, betrayal, or whatever underworld paranoia you’re dealing with.”
Adrian let out a low, humorless chuckle that turned into a sharp cough. He pressed a gloved hand against his bandaged abdomen, wincing slightly before recovering his composure.
“You already are involved, Emma,” Adrian said, his voice dropping to a hypnotic whisper. “When you drove that needle through my chest and pulled me back across the line, you tied your fate to mine. Do you think Detective Vance believes you’re innocent? By tomorrow morning, the federal task force will have a subpoena for your bank accounts, your phone records, and your apartment.”
Emma swallowed hard. She knew he was right. The moment Kessler and the hospital administration filed those charts, she became a permanent fixture in the federal investigation.
“What do you want from me?” she asked.
Adrian gestured toward the envelope with his chin. “Open it.”
Hesitantly, Emma stepped around the coffee table. Her fingers brushed against the thick parchment paper. She broke the red wax seal and slid out a single sheet of heavy black stationery embossed with an intricate, stylized crest.
Inside was a key card to a luxury high-rise condo in downtown Phoenix, a Swiss bank account routing number with a starting balance that made her breath catch, and a handwritten address in the desert outskirts.
“What is this?” she whispered.
“My safehouse,” Adrian replied. “My regular medical team was compromised. The doctor who was supposed to treat me at the extraction point vanished twenty minutes before my car arrived. That means there’s a leak at the top.”
He stepped closer, towering over her. The scent of rain and danger was overpowering now.
“I need a private nurse, Emma. Someone loyal, someone brilliant, and someone who isn't on anyone’s payroll. You keep me alive for the next thirty days while I hunt down the rat who sold me out... and I ensure your entire future is protected from every cop and federal prosecutor in this country.”
“And if I say no?” Emma asked, her eyes narrowing.
Adrian tilted his head, a ghost of a smile touching his lips. “You won't.”
Before Emma could formulate a response, a sharp series of loud knocks echoed against her front door, followed by a voice that made her blood run cold.

“Phoenix Police! Open up! We have a warrant to search the premises!”
Emma spun around toward the door, terror gripping her chest. When she turned back around a second later, the living room was completely empty. The window was clicked shut, and the only proof Adrian Vale had ever been there was the heavy envelope resting on the table.
