Chapter 8 - THE SIEGE OF BLACKWOOD ESTATEThe deep, low thrum of heavy helicopter blades cut through the desert night, vibrating against the reinforced ballistic glass of the Blackwood Estate.

Red and blue tactical searchlights swept across the pristine concrete facade of the safehouse, slicing through the darkness like searching fingers.
“They’re here,” Mateo barked, unholstering a suppressed submachine gun and slamming a fresh magazine into place. He punched a series of codes into the wall console, dropping heavy steel blast shutters over every exterior window. “Tactical units. At least three armored transport vans breaching the front gates right now.”
Emma’s heart hammered against her ribs. Adrenaline flooded her veins, cold and sharp. “How? I paid cash for those supplies using an old burner card!”
“Doesn't matter how, Emma,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into absolute, chilling calm. He grabbed a heavy tactical vest from the wall rack and strapped it over his Henley, wincing slightly as the Kevlar pressed against his healing ribs. He picked up a suppressed automatic rifle, checking the chamber with a smooth, practiced motion. “Victor must have left a digital tripwire on your credit history before you left the city.”
“We’re trapped,” Emma said, looking around the secure medical suite as muffled shouts and the sound of heavy battering rams echoed from the front foyer downstairs. “There’s no other exit from this floor except the main hallway!”
Adrian turned to her, his pale gray eyes burning with fierce intensity. He grabbed her by the shoulders, his grip firm, steady, and grounding.
“Listen to me, Emma. There is a private service elevator behind the supply closet in the back corner. It drops directly down into a subterranean drainage tunnel that leads three miles out into the desert wash.”
“What about you?” Emma demanded, her eyes widening. “You’re still recovering! If you go out there and fight a full tactical team—”
“If I stay here, they kill us both,” Adrian interrupted fiercely. “Mateo will take you down to the tunnel. He’ll get you to a safe vehicle parked at mile marker twelve.”
“I’m not leaving you here to die!” Emma shouted back, her voice echoing off the concrete walls.
Adrian stared at her for a fraction of a second, completely taken aback by the fierce defiance in the young nurse’s eyes. A slow, profound realization flickered across his hard features. He leaned in close, his voice dropping to a low, intense murmur.

“I didn't survive a flatline on a trauma table just to let some crooked cop take me down tonight,” Adrian said softly. “I’m coming behind you, Emma. I swear to you... I will find you at mile marker twelve.”
Before she could argue further, Mateo grabbed her arm, hauling her toward the back storage closet as the heavy reinforced front doors of the safehouse blew inward with a deafening blast of concussion grenades and gunfire.
